About Fast Girls:

Fast Girls don’t mind being the girl everyone is talking about, as long as all eyes are focused their way. They are wanton, daring, shameless, and bold. Fast Girls celebrates the girl with a reputation, the girl who goes all the way, and the girl who doesn't know how to say "no." Featuring writing by Tristan Taormino, Shanna Germain, Donna George Storey, Teresa Noelle Roberts, Saskia Walker, Jacqueline Applebee, Tess Danesi, Shar Rednour, Aimee Pearl, and others, Fast Girls is a racy, provocative collection of erotica by the cream of the crop of female erotica writers. They take readers on unexpected journeys, from a bedroom with every toy imaginable to a sex club, a communal shower, on set with a personal porn star, and more. These characters revel in their sexual excesses, boldly doing what others only dream about.

Catch me on Tristan Taormino podcast Sex Out Loud Friday, March 15

Update: I chatted with Sex Out Loud podcast host Tristan Taormino all about my SELF essay on no longer being kinky and reading a juicy (and kinky!) fetish erotica story from Best Women's Erotica of the Year, Volume 4 on March 15 from 8-9 pm EST. And don't miss me IN PERSON on Thursday, March 21, 7 pm at The Pleasure Chest New York City on the Upper East Side (1150 Second Avenue between 60th and 61st) for a live reading from the book with Calliope Bloom, Tamsen Parker and Sofia Quintero. Plus our audience will include Jayne Renault, smut editor at Bellesa and Dirty Lola of Sex Ed a Go Go, among other cool people! Here's the Facebook page for the erotica reading if you'd like to use it to invite people.

FYI, don't do what I did and visit the Sex Out Loud link above in a crowded professional space with the volume on your computer turned up unless you're okay with "Tune in every week for Sex Out Loud..." blasting into the room. Listen live or after the fact. And I highly recommend subscribing to Sex Out Loud on whatever your favorite podcast streaming platform is, because the interviews are always smart and fascinating. Also, Tristan is writing a memoir that I promise you are going to want to read. She also has a Patreon where you can support her work and get exclusive looks at her book before the general public. I became a patron there and encourage you to check it out.

My new book On Fire has arrived - hear me tonight on podcast Sex Out Loud

My copies of my new Cleis Press anthology On Fire: Erotic Romance Stories arrived yesterday! I love that moment of opening up a box and seeing a book that I made, with the help of so many authors, my publisher and their distributor. This one was a long time in the making, due to my own delaying, so I'm thrilled these stories are about to be out in the world. On Fire will be out on Tuesday, July 18 for Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Google Play and Kobo.

onfirebox

onfirebookstack

The print edition will hit bookstores August 8th and Rose Caraway is narrating the Audible audiobook, which will also be out soon. I'll post when that's for sale. Tonight, July 14th at 8 pm EST I'll be joined by three of the contributors, Donna George Storey, Angela R. Sargenti and Lawrence Westerman, on the podcast Sex Out Loud hosted by Tristan Taormino. Can't wait to hear these authors read from their stories! If you miss the live broadcast, you can listen via the link below to the recording. I'm especially looking forward to it because while I've done readings with Donna before, I haven't heard the others read their work.

sex-out-loud-podcast-tristan-taormino

The book was just reviewed by RT Book Reviews, which said, in part, "A wide variety of writers add their flavor to this eclectic assortment of erotic delights. Each manages to be unique when telling their particular story. Kudos to Bussel for doing an excellent job in organizing this collection."

And I'll conclude with a favor: to a large degree, my books succeed due to reviews from readers like you. If you have read or plan to read On Fire, I'd love if you left an honest review on Goodreads (any time) or Amazon (starting July 18th). The better this book does, the better my chances are for getting more book deals to edit more anthologies and publish more wonderful authors!

Listen to me Friday on Sex Out Loud podcast

This Friday, July 14th at 8 p.m. EST I'll be talking live with host Tristan Taormino on Sex Out Loud podcast about On Fire: Erotic Romance Stories, which comes out Tuesday in ebook form (and August 8 in print and very soon in audiobook) from Cleis Press. I'll be joined by three contributors: Donna George Storey, whose stocking fetish tale "Sensitive to the Touch," opens the book, Angela R. Sargenti, whose "Masquerade" is a very hot vampire erotic story, and Lawrence Westerman, who wrote an incredible femdom BDSM story, "Dreams Made Flesh." And a reminder that through this Saturday, July 15, I'm giving away 15 autographed copies of the On Fire print edition (U.S. only) over at Goodreads, and I do monthly giveaways in my author newsletter open to anyone in the world - the July newsletter already went out, but the August newsletter will have a Women in Lust giveaway.

Sex Out Loud podcast, erotica writing interview & my career essay at Lady Smut

Here are some links to what I've been up to as I get ready to head off to a week of vacation in New England.

On Friday night, I appeared on Tristan Taormino's podcast Sex Out Loud, where she interviewed me about editing the Best Women's Erotica of the Year series, including why I want 500 submissions to Volume 3 (here's the call for submissions). Even more exciting for me was that we got to hear contributors Rose Caraway, Amy Butcher, Tara Betts and Lazuli Jones read from their sexy stories as well! Click the link above or the image below to listen (and please know it's not safe for work!).

sexoutloud

The wonderful erotica author Emmanuelle de Maupassant interviewed me all about my erotica writing and editing career. Here's a snippet of what I said:
I’m interested in exploring aspects of sexuality and attraction largely ignored by pop culture: specifically bisexuality, polyamory, promiscuity, men and women with larger bodies and body image, male submissives, fetishes, or affairs. I don’t sit down to intentionally humanize and eroticize fat people (and those who love and are attracted to fat people) or male submissives and so on; it’s a by-product of the types of characters I tend to write.
Lastly, over at Lady Smut, I wrote about how that career evolved from my law school days as part of second chance week, inspired by the brand new (out today!) very hot erotic romance Perfect by Elizabeth SaFleur, which you can learn more about on her site.

Hear me read from Best Women's Erotica of the Year, Volume 1 Friday night on podcast Sex Out Loud

This Friday night, August 19th from 8 pm ET to 9 pm ET (that's 5 pm PT to 6 pm PT), I'll be on the podcast Sex Out Loud hosted by the wonderful author, sex educator and anal sex expert (among her many other esteemed titles) Tristan Taormino, reading from Best Women's Erotica of the Year, Volume 1 along with contributors Tara Betts ("A New Canvas"), Lazuli Jones ("Starstruck"), Rose Caraway ("The Carnalarium") and Amy Butcher ("Waiting to Pee"). In other words, we'll be reading about travel sex, painting and sex, sex at Comic-Con, polyamorous sex in a unique location and a very unique form of clandestine sex with a trans man in Dolores Park, as well as answering questions about our writing. I got to read with Rose, who also narrated the audiobook, and Amy at a live event in January, and Tara at one in May, but have yet to speak with Lazuli myself, so I'm really looking forward to hearing her read from her very hot story, which you can get a sneak peek of over at Ravishly.

Listen at sexoutloudradio.com and follow @SexOutLoudRadio on Twitter for updates. You'll also be able to listen afterwards. And a reminder: the deadline to submit original fiction to Best Women's Erotica of the Year, Volume 3 is December 1st, 2016.

Talking Fifty Shades of Grey, kinky erotica and hotel sex live tonight on Sex Out Loud Radio!

I'm very excited about being on Sex Out Loud Radio live tonight at 5 pm PST/8 pm EST with Tristan Taormino. I've interviewed her probably 5 times for various publications, so I'm curious what she'll want to ask me about Fifty Shades of Grey, kinky erotica, hotel sex and more. I published my very first erotica story, "Monica and Me," in her anthology Best Lesbian Erotica 2001 and more recently, the gay trans male boxing story "Punching Bag" in her Lambda Literary Award winning anthology Take Me There: Trans and Genderqueer Erotica. You can listen here live or after the show (it's recorded) and call in at 866-472-5788. Follow @SexOutLoudRadio on Twitter for show updates.

Dorkily stalking the newsstands for the February 2012 sex issue of Inked

I'm such a dork but I don't care. I love writing for new venues and it's rare these days that those are print venues. I've been wanting to write for Inked for a while and I haven't seen it yet, but a short interview I did with Tristan Taormino about her work and her tattoos should be in their February 2012 sex issue, on newsstands soon. I've known Tristan for over a decade and have interviewed her multiple times but I learned things from this interview, as I should! If you missed it, I wrote about my first tattoo, "Why I Got The Word 'Open' Tattooed on My Back" for Lemondrop, and think good thoughts about an essay about my second tattoo that is out on submission that I hope to share with you, let's just say sometime in 2012. I have a vague inkling (ha!) that I want to get another one when I'm in Portland, Oregon. Partly because it'd be cool to have one from Portland, Maine and Portland, Oregon, partly because my friend there is a tattoo artist, and partly because the right side of my body is feeling art neglected.

I'm reading Wednesday night from Take Me There

I've mostly retired from doing readings, at least for a while, but I'm very excited to read from Tristan Taormino's anthology Take Me There: Trans and Genderqueer Erotica, which is a little larger than average volume of stories that I haven't read in full but can say I'm extremely honored to be sharing its pages with the likes of writers like Laura Antoniou and Ivan Coyote and Sinclair Sexmith. I'm going to try to bring cupcakes, but no promises. It's a milestone for me in terms of writing what I have no fucking clue about (being FTM, boxing). Lately I'm trying to write fiction in settings and about topics I'm not personally familiar with because it pushes me as a writer to create more interesting settings and stories. A decade ago, which seems hard to believe, I organized a reading for my very first erotica story, "Monica and Me," in Tristan Taormino's Best Lesbian Erotica 2011 and I still remember my awe that people showed up, people traveled for it, that organizing a reading was this thing I could do, not to mention writing a story.

I was such a newcomer to this whole world that is now part and parcel of my life, to the point that I sometimes forget or get jaded. I really do prefer the ease of being behind my computer than live readings, because I just don't think that's where my skill and certainly not where my comfort lies, but the camaraderie, the sense of community, the ability to connect with people who've collectively listened to sex stories and gotten something out of them? That's why I still do it.

Lately I have to push myself hard to finish every story, to get out the queries, to not want to go work as an admin assistant again, (falsely) assuming anyone would even hire me for that. There is an ease to that kind of monotonous work, in my experience, yet while the lazy side of me longs for that, the rest of me wants to be challenged, to see what's next. And every day brings a blank page and that same challenge. I may blog a lot or read a lot or do all sorts of other things to escape that challenge, but it's always right back there, in front of my face. Right now I'm trying to finish a few stories that seem impossible, and I often abandon stories, even though I know my ideas are good, because I can't make them work the way they do in my head. I don't blog about the non-successes, the thousand or two-thousand or three-thousand words without a home sitting in files on my laptop, waiting for me to wrap them up, because I don't want to project that image of failure. I want to celebrate the sales, the publications, but it's those failures that haunt me.

I'm trying to atone for not at least getting to the point where I send out the work, where I try, and risk failure, rather than not submitting at all. I'm atoning to myself, by staying put, no matter how long it takes, because in the end, getting to that ending, flawed and frustrating and imperfect though it may be, is worth it. Last night on my subway ride home I was thinking to myself, I have no idea what to pitch ___, and getting stressed about it, and then I literally walked into my bedroom, got an idea, and started an essay. That act, even more than whatever response I get, reminded me where I'm supposed to be right now.

Reading: Tristan Taormino “Take Me There: Trans and Genderqueer Erotica”
With Laura Antoniou, Rachel Kramer Bussel, and Sinclair Sexsmith
Come celebrate the hump day with some steamy readings from “Take Me There: Trans and Genderqueer Erotica.” Local legendary contributors Laura Antoniou, Rachel Kramer Bussel, and Sinclair Sexsmith read their pieces. Columnist, sex educator, and “Take Me There” editor Tristan Taormino discusses the need for more Trans and Genderqueer erotica. Yes, Bluestockings will supply towels to mop up the sweat.

Speaking of Sinclair Sexsmith, I was looking up the details of this reading and found this column of Sinclair's: "Believe in Gratitude

I am grateful to every book I’ve ever read, all the writers who struggle to squeeze blood from a stone to get the right word on the page in the right place, making stories and sense of this world.

I am grateful to the Internet. Not just because that is the primary place of my career, but because I have been in touch with so many brilliant people because of the ways we share our lives online. It is the revolution of our times.

And if you're free Tuesday, you should also hit up Bluestockings for Samhita Mukhopadhyay's reading from Outdated, plus Thursday you can catch Justin Vivian Bond reading from the memoir Tango.

Tuesday, October 11th @ 7PM – Free
Reading: Samhita Mukhopadhyay “Outdated”
Status: Single, Married, Divorced, Desperate! Subscriptions to match.com and okCupid might be dragging you down instead of doubling your money. “Outdated: Why Dating is Ruining Your Love Life” shows how women have been coerced into believing their self-worth is tied to their relationship status, while addressing the difficulty of negotiating loving relationships within the borderlands of race, culture, class, and sexuality—and of holding true to your convictions and maintaining a sense of independence while doing it. Mukhopadhyay is the executive editor of Feministing.com.

Thursday, October 13th @ 7PM – Free
Reading: Justin Vivian Bond “Tango”
Growing up with the knowledge of being different from the other kids is never an easy task to tackle– especially when one minute you’re being bullied by the neighbor, and the next minute you’re making out. Justin Vivian Bond’s new book, “Tango: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels” vividly details Bond’s coming of age as a trans kid. With inimitable style, Bond raises issues about LBGTQ adolescence, homophobia, parenting, and sexuality, while being utterly fabulous and entertaining.

October 12th reading with Tristan Taormino, Laura Antoniou and Sinclair Sexsmith!

A heads up about this reading! I must admit that often I get contributor copies of anthologies I have stories in and...don't read them. Partly because I'm busy, partly because I feel like I have erotica overload and my leisure reading is often YA, memoir and mystery. This one, Take Me There: Trans and Genderqueer Erotica, though, I'll be devouring every story as soon as it comes in! And look, a cover blurb by Justin Vivian Bond, whose memoir Tango: My Childhood, Backwards and In High Heels I'm anxiously awaiting - I might not be able to hold out for the Nook edition and cave to the paperback. See more blurbs here.

Location: Bluestockings, 172 Allen Street (bet. Stanton and Rivington), NYC

Admission: Free and open to all. We will pass around the hat to help support Bluestockings, so please give what you can.

There will be other Take Me There events with Tristan; see her site for details.

Official Take Me There description:

In mainstream media, the erotic identities, sex lives, and fantasies of transgender and genderqueer people are often oversimplified, sensationalized, or invisible. Take Me There is an erotica collection unlike any other that celebrates the pleasure, heat, and diversity of transgender and genderqueer sexualities. The power of seeing and being seen is a central theme in the anthology; it’s not simply about passing or not passing (an idea often explored with transgender characters), but about being acknowledged and desired in a sexual context.

The book takes you from San Francisco to Israel, from heartache to lust, from stranger sex to a 10 year anniversary, from ballet shoes to butt plug bondage tables, from fumbling teenagers to leatherclad bears, from MTF and FTM—and in between and beyond.

Featuring renowned authors Kate Bornstein (Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation), Patrick Califia (Speaking Sex to Power), S. Bear Bergman (Butch is a Noun), Ivan Coyote (Missed Her), Julia Serrano (Whipping Girl), Laura Antoniou (The Marketplace), Helen Boyd (My Husband Betty), Rachel Kramer Bussel (Gotta Have It), Toni Amato (Pinned Down by Pronouns), Alicia E. Goranson (Supervillianz), filmmaker Tobi Hill-Meyer, musician Rahne Alexander, songwriter Shawna Virago, bloggers Andrea Zanin and Sinclair Sexsmith, and more.

I'm also revisiting Tristan Taormino's book Opening Up (also available for Kindle) because it's become newly relevant to my life (I'm not in an open relationship, but I am attracted to people who are). Visit OpeningUp.net for more information.

Check out the amazing lineup for Take Me There: Trans and Queer Erotica edited by Tristan Taormino

Editor Tristan Taormino posted the author lineup for her fall anthology Take Take Me There: Trans and Queer Erotica, and wrote:

This year and last I've hit a lot of stumbling blocks with my writing, and for a long time erotica was absolved from those blocks, but lately, that's not the case. I've had lots of books I wanted to submit to and just didn't get to finish my stories and that makes me disappointed. However, this story I'm very excited about and think it pushed me into new territory. I have another gay male erotica story coming out this fall, "Stripped," about, yes, a crossdressing stripper, but that one has some humor (and a little edge, since it's set at a frat party, and indeed is in the book Frat Boys). My point is, though, that "Punching Bag" isn't humorous; it's intense, and, I hope, powerful, the kind of story I want to keep writing, because to me BDSM is intense and powerful, no matter the gender of the people involved. I'll post another excerpt closer to the pub date, but for now, please do consider pre-ordering it. I'm linking to Amazon but you can pre-order it from any bookstore.

Here are the first two paragraphs of my story "Punching Bag:"

Kyle still wasn’t sure, two years in, if he liked punching or being punched better, on or off the ring. All he knew was that boxing made him feel alive, lit up, excited, manly…and had even when he was a woman. He’d started lurking around the gym when he’d been Kim, binding his breasts, mostly using the inert punching bags. He was afraid of hitting another woman, but he wouldn’t be afraid of hitting the block of muscle in a man’s chest. He didn’t even need anyone else, at first, to get that special high, one he’d never gotten from running or swimming or tennis.

There’s an energy to a boxing ring that he had never experienced in any other sport, not even wrestling. This was pure, raw aggression, tempered only by the rules of the game and sometimes not even that. It made grown men and women drop all pretense and simply get down to the business at hand, and he liked the way it sliced away every false veneer society put on his shoulders until it was just his mind and his fists, working in concert.

I’m proud and honored to be part of this book, not just because it features a who’s who of queer erotica, but because I feel like I tried something new for me and pushed myself with my trans male gay erotic boxing story “Punching Bag” and am very pleased with the result. This is one I will devour the minute I get my contributor copies! More on it closer to the pub date. Tristan published my very first erotica story, “Monica and Me” (as did Shar Rednour), and I will always remember and treasure that.

Tristan also wrote on Facebook that if this does well, there’s the possibility of turning it into a series, so please remember that when you are buying holiday gifts or looking for your next erotic book purchase. If you know you’ll want to read it, pre-ordering this book (or any book) helps get its numbers up and means wherever you pre-order it from knows there’s a fan base and is more likely to stock more of it!

Closeup of me at Rough Sex 3: Adrianna's Dangerous Mind release party

Me, close up, with Porno Jim in the background - I didn't make it to the red carpet so this is what we've got of me. Taken by Igor of Driven by Boredom at release party for new Tristan Taormino porn DVD Rough Sex #3: Adrianna's Dangerous Mind, which I'll be posting about as soon as it arrives - I can't wait to watch it! Also, check Tristan's Tumblr for lots more photos. It was an amazing party - not sure what the best part was, but perhaps the Njoy Eleven toy filled with delicious marshmallow atop the cake - the two photos of that, along with the movie poster, are mine, below.

Tristan Taormino keynote speech at Oregon State University Modern Sex conference canceled because of "resume and website"

I'm reposting this press release in full because I am horrified by this. Tristan Taormino is my friend, mentor, editor and is a consummate professional. You can read below and see on her website the places she's spoken. She is one of the smartest people writing, thinking and talking about sex today and not only is this utterly unprofessional but these students are missing out on the chance to hear her talk. And, while this was a keynote, I think I can safely say that there is usually room for discussion. This is super fucked up. Aside from the broken promises aspect, the idea that students cannot handle discussion of sexuality and think for themselves is insulting to them. "Claiming Your Sexual Power," while not a talk I've personally heard Tristan give, is something that I think would be of interest to plenty of college students, and at the very least give them room for thought. I'm so sick of people acting like sex is some horrific thing that we should never talk about in public and um, hi, look at the conference speakers. Veronica Monet, who, OMG, wrote a book called Sex Secrets of Escorts: What Men Really Want. Please note: I'm not saying sex work advocates should be uninvited, just that that rationale makes absolutely no sense in the context of a conference about sex. Oh! And look what you can still attend:

Porn as a Feminist Tool

Tobi Hill-Meyer

In response to the sexism and other oppressive themes in porn, some create porn to fit how they think it should be. In this workshop, watch clips and examples of feminist, queer, and counter-culture porn, and hear about the ways this body of work is influencing people for the better.

Tobi Hill-Meyer won the Feminist Porn Award for Emerging Filmmaker 2010 for her groundbreaking film, Doing it Ourselves: The Trans Woman Porn Project, the first porn film by and for trans women. She is also a writer and activist, frequently involved social and political campaigns.

You can follow Tristan on Twitter and RT there, and also write to the people at the bottom of this press release. I'm reposting it in full; usually when I repost, I use ital, but this is long, so I'm not.

SEX EDUCATOR AND SPEAKER TRISTAN TAORMINO, SET TO GIVE CONFERENCE KEYNOTE, UNINVITED BY OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY BECAUSE OF HER ‘RESUME AND WEBSITE’

January 19, 2011

Award-winning author, columnist, sex educator, and filmmaker Tristan Taormino was set to be the keynote speaker at Oregon State University’s Modern Sex conference, scheduled for February 15-16, 2011. Yesterday, she was uninvited by a university representative, who cited her resume and website as the reason.

On October 28, 2010, organizers of the OSU Modern Sex conference booked Taormino to give the keynote talk; they confirmed the date and agreed to fees, and Tristan’s management received a first draft of the contract on November 1. That contract was incomplete and sent back to OSU for revisions. As with many negotiations, the contract was pending as all the paperwork got done, but in late December, OSU again confirmed Tristan’s appearance and conference organizers told her manager to purchase airline tickets, for which OSU would reimburse her.

On Tuesday, January 18, 2011, Steven Leider, Director of the Office of LGBT Outreach and Services contacted Colten Tognazzini, Tristan Taormino’s manager, to say that the conference had come up short on funding. Tognazzini told him that since the travel was booked and the time reserved, they could work with whatever budget they did have. Leider said that would not be possible: “We have to cancel Ms. Taormino’s appearance due to a lack of funding. It has been decided that OSU cannot pay Ms. Taormino with general fee dollars, because of the content of her resume and website.” At OSU, ‘general fee dollars’ include taxpayer dollars given to the University by the Oregon State Legislature to defray various costs. They differ from ‘student activity dollars,’ which are part of every student’s tuition and help fund student groups and activities.

Taormino’s resume includes her seven books on sex and relationships, the 18 anthologies she has edited, numerous television appearances from CNN to The Discovery Channel, and her award-winning adult films. She was a columnist for The Village Voice for nearly ten years and has given more than 75 lectures at top colleges and universities including Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Brown, NYU and Columbia. Her website, puckerup.com , includes sex education information, advice, and information about the films she directs for Vivid Entertainment, one of the largest adult companies in the country.

“In my ten years of booking Tristan at colleges and universities, of course there has been some controversy. But I have never had a university cancel like this last minute,” says Colten Tognazzini, Taormino’s manager. “It’s not unusual for contract negotiations to drag on. Once they confirmed we should book her travel, I felt comfortable the event was a done deal. I continued to work with them in good faith that a signed contract would be forthcoming. I believe that the conference organizers’ hands are tied, and this decision came from much higher up. They have cancelled with less than a month’s notice during Tristan’s busiest season. She gave up other opportunities to go to Oregon. Without a signed contract, we may have no recourse, and were told we will not be reimbursed for her travel.”

Tognazzini spoke to a source at OSU who speculated that the University feared that when it went before the legislature in regards to future funding, legislators would use OSU’s funding of a “pornographer” on campus as ammunition to further cut budgets. This source, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Tognazzini, “I think they’re uninviting Tristan because they don’t want to have to defend her appearance to conservative legislators.”

“I’m extremely disappointed that OSU has decided to cancel my appearance. I’ve been protested before, but never uninvited. I have never misrepresented who I am or what I do. I am proud of all the work I do, including the sex education films and feminist pornography I make,” says Taormino. “The talk I planned to give at this conference, titled “Claiming Your Sexual Power” has nothing to do with porn, but the porn is such an easy target for anti-sex conservatives and censors. I find it ironic that one of the missions of the conference is to understand diverse perspectives of sexuality. Apparently, my perspective—one of educating and empowering people around their sexuality—isn’t welcome at OSU.”

If OSU students and others still want to hear Taormino speak, she will be teaching two workshops at She Bop in Portland on February 13 and 14. “She Bop supports a healthy perspective on sex and sexuality and we are proud to have Tristan Taormino present two years in a row at our shop in Portland. Tristan is a leading educator paving the way for others to help break down the stigma around sex in this country. It is part of our mission as a female friendly adult shop to support sexual empowerment and growth,” say co-owners Jeneen Doumitt and Evy Cowan.

Introduction: Fast Is a (Sexy) State of Mind

I like the fast girls best/they do whatever they wanna do. —Sarge, “Fast Girls”

I named this book after a song called “Fast Girls” by an indie pop/rock band called Sarge*. That song is a feisty, punk-rock ode to a hot girl who is captivating in all kinds of ways.

I’m sure you know a girl like that. Or a woman. Or a lady. Or a butch. Or a femme. Or…you get the idea. She’s the kind of babe who takes no prisoners, who owns her life and her sexuality and not only doesn’t apologize for them, makes sure you notice her and what she’s all about.

Two definitions of “fast,” according to Merriam-Webster are “wild” or “sexually promiscuous,” and while that is the seed of what I was angling for here, I didn’t just want to read about slut after slut after slut. I wanted to read about women who in some way defy the conventional norms-whatever those are in this day and age. That doesn’t mean being shocking for shock’s sake, but following their passion, seeking out what it is that they need to be truly pleasured.

What I love about these fast girls is that even as they are bold, daring and dynamic, they have a thing or two to learn about sex and themselves.

Consider Susie Hara’s fifty-one-year-old protagonist in “Waiting for Beethoven” as she gets it on with a younger man. In current pop culture terms, she’s the cougar, the aggressive older woman seeking her sexy prey. But she is actually nervous and uncertain, as well as aroused. “And now there was no point in telling him she wasn’t going to come when she could already feel a wave of pleasure rolling inside her, kind of a pre-coming feeling, but different than usual; she couldn’t really tell what was her clit and what were the walls inside her and what was contracting and what was releasing and then she realized she must be coming because her body had taken over and been taken over in this luscious finger symphony so she just gave in,” writes Hara, in a description of female orgasm that I think will be familiar to many.

In this book, fast is as much a state of mind as a state of motion. It’s not about trying to slut it up to impress anyone, but about finding what works for you. I was intrigued to find that playing with prostitution, or whoring, came up as a theme in many submissions, as did threesomes with one woman and two men. It makes sense that fast would be associated with women who mix cash and sex, as happens in Angela Caperton’s “Playing the Market,” where the new economy mixes with the world’s oldest profession. In my “Whore Complex,” whoredom is more a state of mind, a go-to fantasy that leaps from the bounds of dirty talk to real life with some unusual consequences. There’s also exhibitionism, such as in Jacqueline Applebee’s “Five-Minute Porn Star,” and submission--there’s a lot of very hot female submission and BDSM play in this book.

These girls are fast when they want to be…and slow at other times. They want to crack their lovers’ secret codes, find out what makes them tick, as happens in Charlotte Stein’s “Married Life.” I like this story because the wife is not just passively accepting her humdrum sex life, but she doesn’t want to have an affair or get a divorce. She wants her husband, the man she loves, but she wants him openly, honestly, freely and when they both give a little of themselves and bravely bare their souls, they find true happiness.

These girls don’t give it up for just anyone. Even the ones who get around have a reason for choosing their lovers, and it’s those reasons, those images, that resonate with me. Here’s Tristan Taormino in “Winter, Summer,” rhapsodizing about the woman she’s about to seduce (or perhaps, who’s about to seduce her is more accurate):

She’s the boy I have dreamed about and jerked off to too many times to count. The one who won’t leave my fantasies, who cruises me in my bedroom, who seduced me months ago in another lifetime with her voice, who plays pool and drinks beer, who grabs my ass in crowded bars just to fuck with my boundaries and catch me off guard, who makes my brain get wet and my pussy explode.

Exactly. Though there are women on the prowl here, women who go after younger men, women who pounce, women who pursue, there are others who are excited about being the object of another’s affection, lust and desire. For them, being fast means courting the man or woman (or more than one person) they are searching for.

These fast girls speak to me on many levels. I admire them, respect them, marvel at them, raise my eyebrows at them, want them. But most of all, I’m excited that they’ve broken free of whatever messages we all receive about how a woman is “supposed” to act and instead they are bent on acting however they damn well please. And that’s my personal definition of a fast, not to mention foxy, girl.

I'm looking forward to watching this

I don't watch porn very often, but last week while traveling this caught my eye, and magically, Vivid Ed sent it to me before I could buy it. Will definitely blog my review of Tristan Taormino's Expert Guide to Advanced Fellatio. As you may know, since I edited the IPPY-award winning Tasting Him: Oral Sex Stories, I have an interest in the topic.
