I only had twenty minutes for the interview and wasn't sure if we'd get to everything I wanted to cover but we more than did, and Jazz had lots of fascinating things to say about her double life as a media star and regular teen, overcoming depression, the fight over restrooms and much more. Over at Salon, I interviewed Marlo Mack about her blog, Gendermom, and How to Be a Girl podcast on raising her 7-year-old transgender daughter. She had such wonderful things to say about listening to her daughter, believing in her and navigating the various other people and institutions they have to deal with in ways that value their daughter's health and safety. Very proud of this one! And not just because Laverne Cox liked it, though that was cool.

Why the Girl Scouts were right to allow transgender girls and the hate behind the petition to stop them

I wrote 10 pieces for Salon this past week; this on the Girl Scouts and transgender girls is one of them. I think my personal favorite is on the fat-shaming inherent in dadbod (which Blogger keeps wanting to autocorrect to "deadwood").

My interview with the authors of Queerly Beloved on how changing genders changed their marriage

I interviewed author couple Diane and Jacob Anderson-Minshall for Slate's Outward blog about their new memoir Queerly Beloved: A Love Story Across Genders. We talked for a long time (almost two hours!) so this is a brief overview of what we discussed, about how they went from a lesbian couple to a lesbian-identified bisexual married to a trasngender man, how their families and the GLBT community reacted, how changing genders affected Jacob and how he's perceived, and more. The book is one I recommend, whether you normally read about transgender or queer topics or not, because it's such an open look at how their relationship and marriage works, how deeply they know each other, though packed with revelations they reveal to each other (and the reader) over the course of alternating chapters. It's my first piece for Slate so if you liked it, I'd love it if you'd spread the word. I also recommend checking out their interview with Tristan Taormino on her Sex Out Loud radio show.

In mainstream media, the erotic identities, sex lives, and fantasies of transgender and genderqueer people are often oversimplified, sensationalized, or invisible. Take Me There is an erotica collection unlike any other that celebrates the pleasure, heat, and diversity of transgender and genderqueer sexualities. The power of seeing and being seen is a central theme in the anthology; it’s not simply about passing or not passing (an idea often explored with transgender characters), but about being acknowledged and desired in a sexual context.

The book takes you from San Francisco to Israel, from heartache to lust, from stranger sex to a 10 year anniversary, from ballet shoes to butt plug bondage tables, from fumbling teenagers to leatherclad bears, from MTF and FTM—and in between and beyond.

This year and last I've hit a lot of stumbling blocks with my writing, and for a long time erotica was absolved from those blocks, but lately, that's not the case. I've had lots of books I wanted to submit to and just didn't get to finish my stories and that makes me disappointed. However, this story I'm very excited about and think it pushed me into new territory. I have another gay male erotica story coming out this fall, "Stripped," about, yes, a crossdressing stripper, but that one has some humor (and a little edge, since it's set at a frat party, and indeed is in the book Frat Boys). My point is, though, that "Punching Bag" isn't humorous; it's intense, and, I hope, powerful, the kind of story I want to keep writing, because to me BDSM is intense and powerful, no matter the gender of the people involved. Here are the first two paragraphs of my story "Punching Bag:"

Kyle still wasn’t sure, two years in, if he liked punching or being punched better, on or off the ring. All he knew was that boxing made him feel alive, lit up, excited, manly…and had even when he was a woman. He’d started lurking around the gym when he’d been Kim, binding his breasts, mostly using the inert punching bags. He was afraid of hitting another woman, but he wouldn’t be afraid of hitting the block of muscle in a man’s chest. He didn’t even need anyone else, at first, to get that special high, one he’d never gotten from running or swimming or tennis.

There’s an energy to a boxing ring that he had never experienced in any other sport, not even wrestling. This was pure, raw aggression, tempered only by the rules of the game and sometimes not even that. It made grown men and women drop all pretense and simply get down to the business at hand, and he liked the way it sliced away every false veneer society put on his shoulders until it was just his mind and his fists, working in concert.



I’m proud and honored to be part of this book, not just because it features a who’s who of queer erotica, but because I feel like I tried something new for me and pushed myself with my trans male gay erotic boxing story “Punching Bag” and am very pleased with the result. This is one I will devour the minute I get my contributor copies! More on it closer to the pub date. Tristan published my very first erotica story, “Monica and Me” (as did Shar Rednour), and I will always remember and treasure that.

Seal Press to publish no-longer-pregnant man Thomas Beatie's memoir in October

"Pregnant man" Thomas Beatie gave birth to a baby girl on July 4th.

His book deal had been announced thusly on May 22, 2008 on Publishers Marketplace (no, he was not the first pregnant man, but Publishers Marketplace, I believe, lists whatever they get sent, there is no fact-checking):

Featured on Oprah and in People magazine, Thomas Beatie's LOVE MAKES A FAMILY: A Memoir of Hardship, Healing and an Extraordinary Pregnancy, the story of the world's first pregnant man, following his transformation from a girl scout and beauty queen to a legal and recognized man with a black belt in marital arts and a loving wife -- and their controversial decision to have Thomas -- who underwent gender reassignment surgery but kept his female reproductive organs -- get pregnant and carry their child, to Kathy Huck at St. Martin's, for publication 0n September 30, 2008, by Andrea Barzvi at ICM (NA).

Not sure what happened to give St. Martin's second thoughts (the massive avalanche of press coverage?), though I'd be curious what made them balk. Maybe the story was not tidy enough? But now Seal Press is publishing it, an interesting though logical move for a feminist press with an emphasis on parenting titles, that has published a prior FTM memoir (Max Wolf Valerio's The Testosterone Files), as well as other books dealing with transgender issues. Editor Brooke Warner write at the Seal Press blog:

Thomas's whole story will be told in his memoir, and it's a fascinating and moving story about family and identity and love, and ultimately about wanting to have a baby with his wife. I think it's true that the notion of family is ever-changing, and that having loving parents, no matter what those parents look like, or how they express their gender, is what matters. Thomas is a trailblazer because he's willing to share his story and he's not shying away from his truth. Why should he have to? He could have done this all in silence, like some trans men before him, but it seems to me that his willingness to be public with his choices can't do anything but help the trans community. Thomas also defines as a man, and he's legally a male, and a husband. If the trans community does in fact want visibility and equal rights then Thomas is doing his part. He's comfortable in his skin, as a man, and proud of his wife and family. He's an honest guy who wanted to have a family and who's opting to tell his story publicly. And who has brought a wanted and loved child into this world.

And the new title is
Labor of Love: The True Story of One Man's Extraordinary Pregnancy. Selfishly, this means it'll be easier for me to get my hands on a copy. I can't wait to read it. And I hope there are baby pictures. There was a NYT Styles piece by Guy Trebay, "He's Pregnant. You're Speechless." At Salon, various transgender activists speculate about what his story means and why he's become so famous, now. The Guardian also has an interesting piece. But even a cursory glance at the press coverage (the first sentence of the first story I'm seeing come up on Google says, "If Thomas Beatie had been born a male and given birth, that would be something to crow about.") tells you why we need his book. I think the combination of his beauty queen pass, and his choice to relinquish that, as well as the motherhood angle are what made this story so captivating. I think it's also interesting to note that this all started with Beatie's essay in The Advocate in April, in an issue devoted to transgender issues.
