Because I love writing about my breasts

Updated July 18 (from my new laptop, the Blogger iPhone app is clearly not the best, or I'm not the best at using it.

My laptop is dying a slow death, which I discovered on my flight Monday to Martha's Vineyard, so I until I get to the Apple store or get a Chromebook replacement, I'm doing most things on my iPhone, including this post, my first time using the Blogger iPhone app. I wrote about why my breasts or any woman's shouldn't be a threat to your marriage for a site I adore, Role Reboot.

My Go Topless Day article, about bare breasts and feminism

My latest for Medium is "On Go Topless Day, a look at topless activism and the law" (subtitle: "Should women defend our right to bare our breasts in public?") and I will once again ask that if you like it, click "recommend" at the bottom. I hope this piece leads to more writing for them, and the recommends help. The article is about today being Go Topless Day, women who've been arrested for going topless , and a look at topless and topfree activism, with detours into things like nurse-ins and the journalist who took her top off in the middle of interviewing a mayor. How could I not find this subject fascinating? If you click on the link in my article for The Outdoor Co-Ed Topless Pulp Fiction Society, you can see some photos of my boobs, and a different topless lady reading my book Cheeky Spanking Stories, along with us in the Washington Square Park fountain, enjoying gelato, and generally having a wonderful day. if you're into that kind of thing. I hope to cover (pun intended--there are many to be made!) another of their events soon.

My breasts on display in Brooklyn

I promise to get a better photo at some point, but this is the casting of my breasts, as decorated by Paigey Pumphrey, who I met on Friday at the kickass jewelry company FancySexyMe's party at Shag, which had a runway show, very hot dancers and more. You can see this casting on permanent display at Shag in Williamsburg (a tattoo-like me is on the left shoulder, on the right side of the photo but you can't really see it). I love the tassels! And the whole thing.

"Are Your Breasts Real?" - my new biweekly sex column launched at Sexis Magazine!

My new column! "Secrets of a Sex Writer: 'Are Your Breasts Real?' and Other Questions Not to Ask a Sex Writer"

“Are your breasts real?” I was asked this while sitting in Happy Ending Lounge following my monthly reading series In The Flesh. True, the questioner held a postcard featuring me dressed in lingerie, holding the Njoy Eleven between my breasts, promoting a public casting of my breasts I’d had done earlier in the year. Also true: I’m a real woman, not some erotic robot without feelings. I was stunned that a stranger would ask such a personal question (and no, he wasn’t drunk), yet after writing about sex in fictional and journalistic ways for the last ten years, perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised.

Read the whole column at Sexis Magazine (and get your free copy of the print edition at the May 20th In The Flesh Reading Series

My breasts in postcard form

Well, me holding my breasts - close enough.

So much to say about my newly decluttered apartment, all the self-improvement I've been attempting, and more, but deadlines and life (and, tonight, Splurge) await. But I will be back in blogging/writing form soon.

For now, I've got these postcards featuring one of my photos by Anya Garrett promoting me baring my breasts January 28th at SHAG, 7:30 pm, 108 Roebling Street at N. 6th, Williamsburg, Brooklyn ($5; free Karma Champagne to first 60 people). We'll be auctioning off the bust for charity, then having a book party and signing for Peep Show: Erotic Tales of Voyeurs and Exhibitionists. It's going to be an event you don't want to miss!

If you want a postcard, they'll be at SHAG by Sunday, or email me at rachelkb at gmail.com with "Shag postcard" in the subject line (US only). See more of Anya's photos photos of me (all shot at SHAG!) in this Flickr set - hopefully this weekend I can get some of the racier ones up.

Boob casting, January 28th, Erotica workshops Febraury and March at SHAG

We will have details and signup information about my January 28th boob casting (yes, my boobs are being cast, live, in public, and we will auction off the casting, plus there's a Peep Show party after and YES, there will be cupcakes, 7:30-10) and my erotic writing workshops (afternoons of February 6, 13, 27 and March 6) at Shag very, very soon, like next week. I promise. I encourage you to shop at Shag in the meantime, or just go and browse all the art, jewelry, cards, bondage coasters, hankies (as in hanky code), lingerie, sex toys and much more. The dressing room is divine!

For now, some more of my photos by Anya Garrett - I'm still sorting through all the ones she shot and deciding on the right sexy one of me featuring Njoy's Eleven to feature in the postcard. Yes, there will be postcards and I'd be happy to mail you one once we get it all sorted out! I'm up to my eyeballs in writing and planning and personal organizing/decluttering and, you, know, life, but this is one of the things I'm most excited about in 2010. I haven't taught erotica in New York in a long time and have never done an ongoing workshop, so I'm truly looking forward to that as well as getting my breasts slathered in Vaseline and covered in plaster (or whatever the material is used to make casts).

Adventures in exhibitionism (aka toplessness)

It's pretty much official, so I better tell you to save the date: the evening of Thursday, January 28th, 2010, I'm getting my boobs cast at Shag. Yes, they do castings (any body part) and we're going to do it live, free, and open to the public, followed by a little soiree (it's me so I'm sure there will be cupcakes involved) and Peep Show: Erotic Tales of Voyeurs and Exhibitionists book signing). Oh, and we'll be donating the proceeds from the sale of my bust to charity (we're still working out which charity). I'm excited about being slathered in Vaseline and ogled.

Sunday I'm going to do a photo shoot, in part because I need new headshots, and in part to promote the event. Next time you're in Williamsburg (2 blocks from the Bedford L train stop, and right near the amazing massage givers at Greenhouse Holistic!), do check out Shag.

Isn't every straight man obsessed with breats?

I almost wrote, isn't everyone? And obviously I'm joking. I know lots of straight guys who are as far from being boobisexuals as possible. As a girl who's, um, well-endowed, I find that fascinating, though in my personal life, I find it annoying. I'm into having my boobs played with, to put it mildly. I do respect it though. In general we tend to treat straight men as monolithic, all liking the exact same fictionalized all-Pamela Anderson world, all the time, and clearly there is great diversity when it comes to men's sexuality. If you do like breasts, straight man or not, check out the Flickr group Cleavage: The Beautiful Divide.

So I was intrigued by this new 32-page comic book The Man Who Loved Breasts by Robert Goodin, out from Top Shelf.

The Man Who Loved Breasts

from Brian Heater's review at The Daily Cross Hatch:

“The Man Who Loved Breasts” proves a surprisingly touching little story. Less fueled by sexual obsession than the title—and cover—might lead one to suspect, the titular man begins the story in a dead-end job typing promotional news letters for a vacuum and sewing company aimed at “housewives out in the suburbs.”

While the sexual overtones are certainly impossible to ignore, it’s the man’s genuine aesthetic affection for breasts combined with a distaste for his mundane employer that lead him to quit his job, experiment with alcoholism, and ultimately open up his own brassiere manufacturing company—all while pressing forth through a number of graphic montages that gleefully reestablish his—and, arguably, Goodin’s—appreciation for the aforementioned body part. The artist also readily embraces the time period in which the story is set, bringing into play the stodgy uniformity of the 50s and the liberating protests of the 60s, ultimately transcending the prurient nature of the story’s title.

My breasts are not safe for work - welcome to the pink ghetto

Cupcakes and bondage
Originally uploaded by rkb1.
I'll never forget how proud yet also weirded out I was when my best friend told me her law firm wouldn't let her access my blog. I also remember well when Tripod just wiped out my old site, raquelita8.tripod.com, because I had some inappropriate photos on there. That made me determined to stick photos of my naked body all over my new site. Okay, maybe not all over, but on there somehow. I'm still amused when people tell me they can't access my blog or site from work and now, thanks to Lux Nightmare, that has a term that's especially apropos for this blog: The Pink Ghetto.

I don't preface every single thing I write with NSFW and feel like it's a blessing and a curse. Sure, sometimes I might post a topless photo, but to me, that's my right. It's my blog and I'm not asking or begging or forcing anyone to read it. That's part of why I love it. I do have to say that I have a love/hate relationship with my own x-rated photos, one I've written about. I have my moments where I want to take them all offline just so I don't get another email like this:

Was surfing along and came upon your site. Learned you write eroitica for just about everybody books an all, well I started to rub my cock enjoying, and then saw "photos" also, well when I got to the pic of you with yourhands tied behind your back and your(beautiful) tits hanging out, I started to leak pre-cum while still jerking my cock hmm! don't usually get any cum, cause I'm taking flomax for my prostate and all the cum usually flows inside instead of out. Gonna have to jerk this ol cock off thats for sure, but thanks again. I live not that far from you (nassau cty) if I ever get a chance visit you in queens it would be my delight to give you a licking from head to toe like only an old man could do!8-) Bill

I'm not as horrified as I used to be because yes, I know that if you put up sexy photos of yourself online, people are going to have this reaction and the optimistic and sex-positive part of me doesn't mind as long as they stay safely behind their keyboards. I wish there were a way to block certain things online from certain people, but, alas, there's not, and when it comes to written and photo content of mine, I have to make decisions that sometimes mean people see things I'd rather them not see, but to me, there's a bigger purpose. For me, the photos are there for me first and foremost, to capture a moment, a time, to make me feel good about myself on the days I feel like total crap, like the last few weeks when I've barely been able to drag myself out of bed and feel like I'm living in my once sexy now blanket-like black dress.

Even this photo accompanying this post (my most popular photo on flickr), which doesn't contain nudity, probably isn't "safe for work" in the sense that if your boss sees it, unless you're in some lucky field having to do with bondage or cupcakes, they probably will know you're not working.

Of course, it's kindof exciting to know that some software someone somewhere in some bank or law firm has deemed my words or photos too risque for the workplace. On the other hand, I'm rarely linking to or posting what I consider XXX material. Thankfully, there's such things as RSS feeds and even delayed gratification. I'm not going to say I'm proud to be in the pink ghetto because I think what puts some of us there is a lot of prudery, and the way our culture works is that the things that are in the pink ghetto become more exciting simply by nature of being cloaked in taboo, which, if I'm trying to do anything, is get us out of that mindset. I love to find out things about people's sex lives and thinking about sex that make me see them, and the topic at hand, in a new light, and often I learn about myself that way. It's why I read blogs like Sexerati, it's why I still care even when I sometimes long to move out of New York and go somewhere and become a mommy blogger. But then I come to my senses and realize that New York is probably the only city that would have me, and vice versa, and that I can be a mommy blogger someday and a, well, me blogger. I don't like the label "sex blogger" cause that makes me feel trapped, itchy, bound and not in the good way. Sex fascinates me, sure, but I think "sex" is so much bigger than what we give it credit for. So wherever you're reading this from, thank you, firstly, and I guess thank you too to any business that block me for making your users that much more curious about what's behind the pink door.

My breasts for sale

Well, not really, though if there were an easy way to make money off my tits, I'd be all ears, though I'd much rather make money off my writing. To that end, I've taken out an ad at the fabulous Viviane's Sex Carnival using a photo of me topless. It's one of the few of me topless that I actually like.

It's funny because I am SO much more of a voyeur than an exhibitionist, and for our sequel to Caught Looking I'm writing a story that may wind up under a pseudonym that's about something that happened to me but from the other person's point of view. For me, kindof like writing in the second person, that shift in perspective frees me up to be really dirty. Because it was really dirty and totally hot, in ways that I don't know if I could write about here or anywhere in the first person and not be misunderstood. Part of why I envy so many of the bloggers and authors I read is that they can easily own up to their complexity and seemingly not have to worry about any consequences. Or just take those risks. But I don't know that I can. Some people would find the idea of putting topless photos or even nude ones online risky as well, but to me, that's different. Once the photo exists, on some level, that ceases to be "me." It's a photo of me, yes, but the person I am today may be totally different from who I was when I took those photos.

I guess the challenge for me, especially as a single woman, is to find people, both friends and otherwise, who get the difference, who get the separation, who get the need to show off some things and to keep some things private. Who get that there is so much more going on inside me than I'll ever be able to or want to write down, even though I have that urge, almost always, to put some words down to help make sense of things. When I have weekends like I did this past one, when I look forward to Monday because it means forcing myself out of the house, where I just sleep and sleep and sleep because that's easier than getting up and facing all the feelings of doubt and rejection and lethargy, well, it makes me realize that trying to whore out some book I edited is easy compared to so many other things.

In some ways I'm really glad to be free of the awful baggage and stigma that comes with being a "sex columnist." Not that I would've quit or would've wanted it to end this way or thought I might feel in any way freed by it, but still. I think I always have at the back of my mind that everything will fall apart, I'll be jobless, homeless, ruined, basically. I kinda did that already once, going into that massive debt, flunking out of law school, even before that, becoming this utterly undesirable job candidate, and ever since hitting that low, I've been very slowly rising out of that. It's taught me things I probably couldn't have learned barreling through grad school at 20 years old and hoping to figure out where to land.

Right now, even as I'm actively seeking out new gigs which will likely center around sex writing, I'm also hoping that whatever comes next broadens me as a writer, like the Voice column did but without getting so attached to that role. Because that's all it was for me in the end, a role, one I clearly clung to too tightly because the separate feels weird. It felt weird to have to change my bios in my new books to say "wrote" instead of "writes." It feels weird to have notebook pages filled with dates and topics that are now dead ends, half-formed ideas that may never get any further than those jotted title scribbles. And yet, I feel kindof calm. Not because everyone has told me I'm much better off without all that nonsense, but because maybe it's time I got on with my life and figured out what I'm meant to be doing and writing. I think it's easy to get and stay in ruts, especially for me, and the biggest thing I want is the one that the more I chase it, the farther away it seems. So I will have to balance living in the day-to-day reality with figuring out how to get to where I want to be. And if in the process I'm trying to also figure out how to make a little money at this madness that is the book publishing industry, so be it.

Breasts at work

There's been a very interesting dialogue going on over at Modestly Yours about breasts in the workplace

I link to it not so you can all jump in and be like "yay boobies!" but because I've found the dialogue really intelligent and interesting. I don't think there's an easy answer and really do admire Wendy for making me feel welcome in that forum.

The most interesting part is that their coverage stems from a blog post by a "backslidden gay Roman Catholic" who outs himself as a sometime boobiesexual, writing:

The office is no place for boobies. What would you think if I went around with my my ass or genitals showing? (Besides, "oh man, he's HAWT!") You can make all the arguments you want about boobies not being sexual organs and you can say, "look at my face when I'm speaking!" But if you are showing the boobies I'm still gonna look. I can't imagine what you are putting the straight guys through. My mom always said that we should avoid being a near occasion of sin for someone else. I know that sounds archaic to some people, but really ladies, do you get off on getting men off at the office?

You can see what I had to say over at Modestly Yours. And, just to emphasize my point, I don't read or comment on Modestly Yours to be a troll. I'm truly interested in what the bloggers have to say and have had a really eye-opening dialogue with Wendy Shalit over the last few months that I hope to continue. I never want to have knee-jerk reactions to anything and while I still maintain my write to dress in the way I like, which often happens to mean baring a goodly amount of cleavage, I am also curious to hear what others have to say on the topic.

Why I'm Happy With "The Cleavage Situation"

(most photos courtesy of Cleavage: The Beautiful Divide photo pool on Flickr; see also all Flickr photos tagged with "cleavage")

Since it’s the height of summer, I’ve been seeing a lot of cleavage. From tank tops to dresses to bikinis, boobs are everywhere. Personally, I like the view, but I’ve been dismayed to read so many anti-cleavage thoughts lately. I stumbled upon this one at Mommy Life:

I've been so dismayed this year by the cleavage situation. I breathed a sigh of relief when short skirts were replaced by longer, fuller skirts this year. But my goodness! I can't believe how American women and girls have been brainwashed into exposing themselves above the waist.

The way women’s dressing choices is characterized here (“women and girls have been brainwashed”) points to a very basic flaw in her argument. Skin may be in, and may be pushed in ads, but to say that we’re “brainwashed” is a truly disturbing way of putting it. Just because I make different choices than you do, I’m suddenly a dupe of some marketing scheme? In a word: no. Perhaps women have come to understand that their skin is their own, and that instead of feeling like they need to feel ashamed of the parts that make them womanly, they can revel in them. Body image issues are so widespread, and I’m not immune to them, so wearing cleavage-bearing tops is one way I feel good about myself. For me, it’s like putting on lipstick; a little boost that helps enhance my outlook. It’s not that I can’t have a good day dressing in a turtleneck (well, in August that might apply), but I feel my best when my breasts are front and center.

For me, when I wear cleavage-baring outfits, which is almost every day, I do so because it makes me feel good. My breasts are one of the few parts of my body I don’t have at least occasional qualms about. When I wear a certain bra and revealing shirt or dress, I feel better about myself. I buy necklaces to nestle right above or in my cleavage, and often, no matter what I’m wearing on the bottom, my breasts are the main visual attraction.

Yes, I know people are going to look at them, and I don’t mind. It would be foolish and a falsehood to say, “Let us wear super low-cut tops, but look away, and pretend you don’t notice.” But it would also be foolish and false to assume that women don’t court that attention to some degree. Not all women, but some. I know plenty of other women who regularly wear cleavage-baring outfits, to the point that when their breasts aren’t visible, we wonder what’s wrong. This isn’t necessarily designed to turn on everyone we see, but for as varied reasons as the choice to wear a certain pair of jeans over another. Maybe it’s hot out, maybe you like the way it looks, maybe you want to get that little boost that comes from showing some skin. We can recognize that dressing in a sexy way may mean people look at us, but looking is one thing; touching another.

Hayley Dimarco’s latest book Sexy Girls: How Hot Is Too Hot? takes the cleavage-hating (and -baiting) a step farther, where on the back cover she declares, “If It’s Not on the Menu, Keep It Covered Up!” This is a theme for the author of Dateable and The Technical Virgin, and centers around the premise that boys and men are constantly checking out women (I’ll give her that, for straight guys, this is probably true) and thinking lewd thoughts about them.

Where I can’t go is to therefore attempt to control what women should and shouldn’t wear. The fact of the matter is, guys can fantasize about us when we’re wearing sweatpants. Haven’t you ever wondered why, even looking your rattiest, you still may get sexually harassed? Or about why your guy may get turned on to see you in one of his shirts?

By assuming that women only dress for men’s pleasure or to garner their attention, or, that by getting their attention, we must therefore cater to it, she falls into the trap of reinforcing the male gaze and privileging it. I’m not suggesting teenage girls wear the most revealing clothes possible, but part of figuring out your personal comfort level and fashion style is trial and error. There may be positives and negatives to showing some cleavage, but telling young women that they’re causing men to sin in their minds because they happen to have breasts and be proud of them, is demeaning to both men and women. It assumes that guys can’t keep their thoughts to themselves, and can’t think any farther than what you see is what you get. In fact, the very opposite may be true; the most demure-looking girl may be the one putting out, and the one dressed as dirty as can be may be a virgin. True, people make assumptions based on first impressions, but we all know the old saying about what we do when we assume: make an “ass” out of “u” and “me.” People may assume hundreds of things about my personality, values, age, religion, and sexuality from a five-second glimpse of me, and only a small fraction of that can I control. Why should I pander to the countless strangers I will encounter throughout my day, changing my dress, to suit them? That would be putting their interests ahead of mine, discounting my desire to feel at my best when I get dressed in the morning.

At the same time, I do realize that people are looking, and contrary to the belief that this puts my breasts “on the menu,” in a way, I see it as the opposite. When I’m dressed in a revealing way and someone starts hitting on me, I tend to discount their attentions, or, at least, take them less seriously. I know that in all likelihood they’re drawn to that aspect of my appearance, and that’s okay, I’m not saying they shouldn’t be, but I’m aware of it and it influences how I respond. In a sense, perhaps, it’s a way of warding off the superficial. I can flirt or talk to people and not expect anything more, because in my head I’ve already armed myself with the knowledge that they’re there mostly to look. In the same way, by nature of being a sex columnist and putting so much of my raw feelings and adventures out there, I will attract certain people to me who can’t see beyond that, who form assumptions about who I am and what I want, based on that, I also know that when some people see the cleavage, they also may make similar assumptions. Knowing the likelihood of these assumptions gives me power, and helps me automatically rule those people out.

I’ve learned the hard way never to date anyone I meet because they read my writing. It’s just destined to fail, because they’re drawn to a single side of me without knowing the rest. They may want to know the rest, but it’s too imbalanced and unnatural for me. I can appreciate their interest and am grateful people are touched by my words, but I have to keep in mind that, on a very basic level, that’s work. It’s the same with the cleavage; I would never want to date someone who insisted I wear cleavagey outfits all the time, one who was so invested in my boobs that they felt like they owned them. I think part of the problem is the idea that women dress, first and foremost, to impress men, and perhaps secondarily, other women. Dress for yourself! Dress in whatever way makes you happiest and most comfortable, and you will exude all the qualities about yourself you want others to absorb. I can let it slide if people see me and automatically think, “slutty dresser = slut” because I know what I’m about. Caring too much about other’s opinions will have us bending over backward to please the anonymous masses, and always failing. Trying to control the opinions of everyone who will look at you in a given day is a Sisyphean task if I ever heard one, and puts the power of the gaze solely in their eyes, not yours.

Cleavage shouldn’t be mandatory, but neither covering it all up, day in and out. At a wedding I attended this summer, I worried that my dress might reveal too much boob. “Don’t worry, we’re a cleavage-friendly family,” the bride told me, which was later proved true with some of her own busty attire. If she’d said otherwise, I’d have changed, but I was glad I could be myself and still be accepted into the (forgive me) bosom of this special occasion.

To castigate cleavage leads us right back into assuming that breasts, in and of themselves, are dirty and private. It’s the same attitude that finds flaws in talking about (and even showing!) breast-feeding. Let’s face it: yes, breasts are sexual, and sexualized. But many of us like it that way. You don’t have to be a Girl Gone Wild to appreciate the power of a good rack. You don’t even have to be a straight guy, either. One of my most popular columns was called “Meet the Boobiesexuals,” and looked at straight women and gay men who are sexually attracted to women’s breasts, but don’t want to actually sleep with women. This phenomenon continues to fascinate me, not only because it shows how our rigid boxes for sexual orientation cannot contain people’s wonderfully exuberant sexual desires, but also that breasts have widespread erotic appeal.

I appreciate that settings like churches and schools, like the Texas school district that recently banned cleavage, might want to control how much flesh gets bared in their environments. But in the everyday adult world, we’re big girls, and we can decide how we want to dress and what messages we want to send. You may not like those messages or not agree with our choices, but I may not love what you’ve chosen to wear either. To all but call women who wear revealing outfits sluts simply based on what they’re wearing is sexist and degrading. It also puts forth the idea that if we wear the “right” clothing, we are safe from men’s wicked fantasies and comes dangerously close to suggesting that women are “asking for it” if they dress in a certain fashion.

There’s a line between offering suggestions and positive affirmations and fostering a split between the cleaved and not. Every man and woman should be able to choose their clothing options. I’m not saying that if you go out in a super low-cut top, you shouldn’t expect to be ogled; you should. I’m saying that a) some women like that and b) ogle all you want, my boobs are still mine; they are not “on the menu.” (On the occasions when they are, it’s explicitly clear to the potential diner.)

And if I ever learn to play the electric guitar and rock out, my first choice for a band name is “The Cleavage Situation.” I hope it isn’t already taken, but if it is, consider me groupie #1.

Lusty Lady, "Meet the Boobiesexuals"

Meet the Boobiesexuals
Gay men and straight women lust after bulging breasts too

Not sure if the girl who's cleavage is shown in the hot cleavage photo wants to out herself The accompanying photo is of my friend Nichelle, who's very proud of her boobies, and even runs a Flickr group, The Beautiful Divide, devoted to cleavage. And it should be The World Famous *BOB* and later *BOB* which is how I turned it in - hopefully it'll be correct in the actual paper. Visit her website for more info.
