Free erotica writing workshop in Brooklyn at Sex Expo September 24

My final live erotica writing workshop will be on Sunday, September 24 from 2:10 to 3 p.m. at Sex Expo in Brooklyn (72 Noble Street, Brooklyn Expo Center), and if you use this link you can get in for free! I'm shifting almost all my teaching to the online classes I'll be launching this fall, so this will probably be my last New York class for the foreseeable future. I'll be sharing more about those classes as soon as they're available, but I can tell you that the sharing that happens in my live classes is special. I love seeing people's faces transform, as they get bolder about what they're writing and what they're willing to share with others, as they dig into their erotic imaginations. It's really the perfect environment because you're surrounded by toys and good energy. Everyone will get a handout with more resources.



I'm aware that this class is taking place during Rosh Hashanah, although I didn't know that when I booked this many months ago and forgot to check. I decided that since I rarely have the opportunity to teach live classes these days and since it's such a wonderful event filled with amazing sex toys that I want to check out, I'd go ahead and do it. But I apologize to anyone who would have liked to attend but can't due to the holiday. If I do teach any more in person classes, I'll do my best to make sure they are on dates when as many people as possible can attend. I'm not a storyteller but I'm playing one Thursday night in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

I guess I am a storyteller, in that I write fiction, but live? On stage? I actually dread it. Freeze up. Become totally petrified and want to run away, but sometimes, like this Thursday night, those are the things you do in life anyway. My Brooklyn life as a "crazy garbage lady"

I resurrected this essay, "How I Became a Crazy Garbage Lady," that never got published when I wrote it in 2013 because it's one of my favorites, falling into the "laughing at myself" and "truth is stranger than fiction" categories. Here's the opening:

This morning, I stepped outside my apartment on Williamsburg’s busy Metropolitan Avenue to find my worst nightmare come true: my discarded bra, t-shirt, gym shorts, empty CD cases and other bits of garbage I’d carefully placed in a plastic bag were strewn across the grate in front of my building, apparently not even worthy of being collected by New York City’s sanitation department. I’m not sure what I did to violate the rules, considering that I discarded dozens of CD cases and only a few were lying there, displayed like some bizarre conceptual art piece, but it’s precisely the fear of this scenario that’s turned me into a woman I jokingly call “crazy garbage lady.”

I know it's winter and I rarely leave my house unless I have to, which is usually to go to the post office (let's hear it for working from home in winter!), so I get that going outside may not be everyone's top priority in this weather, but if you're near BookCourt and/or want to hear some sex stories for free, definitely check it out, and if you're not in the area but know anyone in the NYC area who might appreciate hearing stories and a Q&A about sex, send them our way. My Washington Post essay on hoarding and love

I have a new essay up at The Washington Post's Post Everything section called "Old magazines, stuffed animals and sex toys: How hoarding shaped my relationship." I wrote the subtitle, they wrote the title, and I also included the photo below of my old Brooklyn apartment. Here's the thing: when you write personal essays, you need to go all in, in my opinion. Not just for your editor's sake, but for yours. I've struggled with writing about some of the worst of my hoarding, because I'd like to think I'm "past it," but as you'll see in the essay, I'm not. Also, this is one of my biggest bylines, so if you like the essay (or feel anything about it, or just want to support my writing career), I'd love it if you'd share it, either publicly or privately with someone who may get something out of it. Yes, I'm a hoarder, but I firmly believe hoarding doesn't only affect "hoarders," but all of us. It's about what we do with our stuff and how we value it, and even compulsively neat people are impacted by fear of becoming hoarders. Also, it's about love, and I am in love, big time.

It gave us the opportunity to revisit famous spots such as Staten Island and Washington Square Park, and to discover lesser-known places such as Spoonbill & Sugartown, Booksellers in Williams- burg, where Hannah and Sandy frolic, and the Little Cupcake Bakeshop in the Nolita section of Manhattan. Many cultural references in the show are intertwined with the locations, and they intrigued us, too. The book includes, among other recipes, one for CHristina's Polish Restaurant's potato and cheese perogies. The book has Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

This is fitting, given the popularity of WNYC's Girls hotpots map, covered in The New York Times and many other venues. In June Lena Dunham posted a photo on Instagram of a sign touting an unofficial Girls tour, though many, including Brokelyn, said it probably wasn't real. But many have done their own personal version of such a tour: Crushable, Time Out New York, Brooklyn Exposed and others have offered up their own guides. The newyork.com details The Williamsburg Edge, Peter Luger Steak House, the Bedford Avenue L station, Royal Oak, Fada, Coney Island, the Jane Hotel, and even Queens, location of The Foundry in Long Island City, where Tessa and Thomas John got married. In February, Rebecca Nicholson traveled to Brooklyn for The Guardian, staying at Williamsburg's Wythe Hotel, and wrote about Brooklyn's appeal as she hit Café Grumpy, Beacon's Closet, Bushwick restaurant Roberta's, Bushwick Country Club, Brooklyn Bowl and other locales, concluding:

Girls' New York doesn't suit a bus tour, to be honest – looking at facades and coffee shops makes a strange pilgrimage – but the spirit of it is entirely within reach, and neon string vests are, thankfully, optional.

Vulture visited some of the sites and offers up a video, in which a Café Grumpy barista says a guy came from Canada because he'd seen it on the show:



Deadline reports that the Season 2 Girls finale drew 632,000 viewers, "down from the 1 million who watched the show’s Season 1 finale June 17," but buzz is already building for Season 3.

HBO is also courting Girls fans with a range of official products, from Deborah Lippman nail polish to t-shirts with sayings like "Deflowered not Devalued" and "I Am Unfit for Any & All Paying Jobs" to an iPhone and iPad case and a 2014 Girls wall calendar. "Girls 2014 features photos from the first two seasons of the HBO show." What else? 11X17 posters of characters and resolutions: Hannah ("I Resolve To Not Let Guys Treat My Heart Like Monkey Meat"), Jessa ("I Resolve To Not Flirt With My Boss"), Marnie ("I Resolve To Be Less Uptight") Shoshanna ("I Resolve To Meet A Young Financial Planner"), Adam ("I Resolve To Wear A Shirt") and Ray ("I Resolve To Stop Dating Younger Women").
