Smut Slam Berlin coming up April 16

Berlin readers, with my upcoming June 12 Berlin erotica writing workshop booked, I've been researching other cool events in Berlin. I wanted to make sure you know about Smut Slam Berlin on Monday, April 16, with the theme of "BOOTY," hosted by the wonderful Cameryn Moore. You can get tickets here and spread the word using the Facebook event page. I won't be in Berlin for it, but I wish I could attend! Here's the official description:
BOOTY. Maybe you have it. Maybe you want it. Either way, it's all here at SMUT SLAM!

This April, Berlin's only dirty storytelling open mic--based on real life, real lust, real sex--is putting out that steam heat at Lovelite (Haasestraße 1, Berlin), with the theme of "BOOTY." Be as literal or metaphorical as you like: Treasure. Ass. Late-night hook-up call. Just bring us your story, and we'll be behind you 100%!

Here's a video to give you a little taste of Smut Slam:

Created and hosted by professional perv Cameryn Moore, the Smut Slam features real-life, first-person sex stories, guest stories from our panel of celebrity judges, and also THE SMUTBUCKET, a convenient receptacle for all your anonymous questions and confessions!
Cameryn is also hosting BEDx Berlin on Tuesday, April 24. It's described as: "BEDx is a new night dedicated to current research, art, and education about topics in sex and sexuality. BEDx brings local and international researchers, artists, and educators to the stage for 10-minute presentations about their pet topics, followed by 10 minutes of Q&A."

I'm not a storyteller but I'm playing one Thursday night in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

I guess I am a storyteller, in that I write fiction, but live? On stage? I actually dread it. Freeze up. Become totally petrified and want to run away, but sometimes, like this Thursday night, those are the things you do in life anyway. In this case, since I will be in New York and don't plan to do any other events there this year, it seemed worth getting over my fears. I hope it'll be funny, but I know in 15 minutes or less it'll be over. I'm either talking about being a hoarder when I lived on Metropolitan Avenue, just a few blocks away from Brooklyn Brewery, or something way, way more embarrassing. Come to the show to find out! Thursday, April 16th, Brooklyn Brewery, 79 N. 11th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (L to Bedford). Hosted by Tom Shillue, starring me, Avital Isaacs and Andre Medrano.

"Tickets are generally $10 each, but for Comedy Week, we've discounted the ticket to $5 each, meaning if you buy two $5 tickets, that adds up to the price of 1 ticket ($10). Each guest must have their own ticket for entry. Tickets purchased at the door will be $12 per person and the 2-for-1 offer will not be valid." Purchase your tickets online at Eventbrite.

3 kinds of ice cream cake tonight at Yum's The Word

Today for The New York Observer, I wrote up the storytelling and ice cream cake show Yum's The Word, which I hope to attend soon. Who wouldn't want to be part of this? Just found out via their Tumblr that there are the homemade ice cream cakes being served: Nutella/Chunky Monkey with Crushed Ferror-Rocher Pieces, Caramel/Butter Pecan with Crushed Graham Crackers, Boozy Egg Nog Ice Cream Cake with Crushed Gingerbread Men. Yum indeed! Keep sending your listings with full details in the body of an email to 8dayweek at observer.com - thank you!

Greetings from Austin, see you tonight at Bookwoman and Thursday at Bedpost Confessions!

Hello from Austin! I hope you'll join me or let your Austin friends know about my 2 events here this week, the erotica writing workshop tonight, Tuesday, November 19th from 7-8:30 at feminist bookstore Bookwoman at 5501 N Lamar Blvd A-105 ($15/person). Call 512-472-2785 to register or you can do walk-in registration too. Many thanks to do512.com, austintexas.org, The Austin Chronicle and CultureMap Austin for listing it.

Bookwomanworkshop

Then Thursday night, November 21st, I'm expanding on my age play story at Bedpost Confessions, which sounds like a huge event and which I'm fairly nervous about, since I usually do better revealing those kinds of things behind the shield of my laptop screen, but I'm excited and think it builds character to do the things you're scared of. Bookwoman will be selling my books there too! It's the 21st at 8 at The North Door, 501 N I-35, Austin, TX 78701. Tickets are $10 at the door.

And a few fun photos from Austin so far, I arrived on Sunday and checked out the East Austin Studio Tour, which I highly recommend, and, of course, a bingo hall:

I saw some little kids deconstructing one of these and thought it was allowed, like interactive art, until I saw them get reprimanded.

Bingo!
We didn't win but I still had the best time playing bingo amongst what seemed like semi-professionals, with computers and words I didn't even know, though I liked that kids were allowed too!

Free story slam and storytelling in New York tonight

It's the How I Learned/Best in Show Blender tonight and it's free! Full details in my New York Observer writeup - I don't think I've heard of another event where you can tell a story and get professional feedback on it for free! Plus it benefits the wonderful folks at Housing Works, whose mission is "to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy, the provision of lifesaving services, and entrepreneurial businesses that sustain our efforts."

How I Learned Who's Coming to Dinner June 22nd

I barely have time to plug my own events here but I wanted to share this - it looks fabulous! I've seen Victor and Blaise and Eugene perform (do check out Eugene's New York Confidential series, which I've performed at, too, see below for Roll the Dice June 18th) and read Dodai regularly at Jezebel. I was literally just talking about Victor's joke about getting a cab which I'd link to but don't have it handy. And Happy Ending Lounge is conveniently located near Meatball Shop! Also, add to the list of umpteen classic movies I haven't seen: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

Speaking of race and stories, I will have my interview with her up soon (I hope) but do check out Diane Farr's new memoir Kissing Outside the Lines: A True Story of Love and Race and Happily Ever After. (Hint: It's nothing like I Got the Fever except that it's about interracial dating.) It's heartbreaking at times to see racism laid out so bluntly but it's also moving and about love and families and what we do for each of them. If you didn't catch it, Diane had a Modern Love essay, "Bringing Home the Wrong Race," in last week's New York Times. You can follow her @GetDianeFarr on Twitter and Facebook her official site is kissingoutsidethelines.com. Good inspiration for me to finalize that interview because she had some fascinating things to say that took a while to process about race and identity and parenting.

To me the mark of a good comedian or performer is when their work continues to stay with you; Hari Kondabalu comes to mind. His joke about chocolate is one I think my friends Twanna and Nichelle and I will always find funny. Jokes are almost impossible to repeat, and I wouldn't try on a blog, so go see it. Definitely recommended. I'm planning to attend this.

The How I Learned Series Proudly Presents:

Saturday night! Williamsburg! Storytelling! $5! Tough Love Boulevard...

I'm so tired today from staying up til 4 trying to write procrastinating that I left my refillable mug at Starbucks. Full of coffee. That was sad. I will be more perky and awake on Saturday night when I tell a story of tough love. Which story of tough love I am trying to figure out...the one about the socialist? the one about the person I keep freaking dreaming about (literally, in my dreams, at night, once even with him and Sarah Palin)? the one about...?

Sign up at the mailing list here for a discount. If you get to Williamsburg before 6 I highly, highly recommend stopping by Saltie. I ate their Clean Slate sandwich on Saturday and Sunday. A photo is below, but each time it's a little different - Saturday the beets were in mini rectangles, Sunday they were shredded. It's homemade naan bread, hummus, yogurt and assorted crunchy bits. I also shared a chocolate meringue and seriously. So. Good.

My truth

The last thing (for now, of course, and hopefully for a good long while) I’ll say here about the whole drama of ’06 is that I think the truth is one of our most precious commodities. In so many ways, as trite as it may sound, the truth does set you free. Yet my truth and your truth may differ; I can only look inside my own heart and offer up what I see there, and that is perfectly, validly, within my right. Not only that, I feel it is, in part, my duty, my serenity, my salvation, to tell those truths in whatever way I see fit.

And there’s a reason things like Fresh Yarn, Heeb Storytelling (ahem), SMITH, Cringe, Mortified, True Sex Confessions, True Mom Confessions, and brilliantly gutsy, beautiful writers like Rebecca Woolf are thriving. We as a people want to hear those stories. We relate to them. We see ourselves reflected in them. For me, sharing stories is selfish in the sense that it’s about me first, my need, my priorities. But the secondary effects are so powerful. We get so wrapped up in our own daily cares and concerns, especially our own dramas, that we forget other people have been in the same situation⎯or worse. I’ve heard so many heartbreaking, yet soothing in that way only commiseration can provide, stories in the last few months, and they make me see that I’m not alone.

Lastly, anyone trying to blame or shame you for sharing your truth needs to take a look inward. I’m talking broadly here, because I’ve done it too. It’s their own flaws, failures, lacking, problems, that they are angry about, most especially at those who’ve seen them up close and personal. Most especially at those who realize that their insides may not match their outsides. Of course those people want to maintain their facades, of course they would rather shut other people up. I’m sure, say, Stephanie Klein’s ex-husband or, more importantly, her ex-mother-in-law, are not thrilled with how they were portrayed in Straight Up and Dirty. But I’d be willing to bet that any discomfort they feel has to be at least as much due to their own actions, their own mistreatment of others. I think anytime someone mistreats you, there are some who will turn on you instantly, like it’s your fault. I’ve seen people criticizing Mike Daisey for not having another copy of his show notes, completely missing the point. We berate ourselves enough and I’ve certainly done so but one thing I will not do is apologize for telling my truth, my way.

There are too many ironic, sad twists and turns to that story to get into it any further here; maybe I’ll bring it up at BEA and see if anyone there wants to do something with it. Actually, I’d rather let it fade because I have much better things to tell you about and share and explore. But this is about more than the First Amendment or blogging or breakups or any specifics. It’s about our stories and however we make sense and peace of them. This, these words, are how I do it, and anyone is free to read or not read them as they wish. I didn’t ask for these feelings, I didn’t ask to be placed in a really horrible situation, I didn’t ask to get my heart broken, but I did, and I dealt with it.

I found this great Daily Om (do click and subscribe) piece about “Finding Unqualified Happiness” that I think is so important. Hard, but important.

The circumstances you live through each day have the potential to bring both joy and despair into your life. Relying on the reactions they awaken within you to create an emotional foundation means living on a roller coaster of feeling whose course is determined by chance. Though you may yearn for the object of your desire-be it a new job, financial health, a spouse, or some other symbol of success-you have within you the power to be happy without it. Letting go of your "if only" thinking patterns can be as easy as recognizing that inward emptiness cannot be dispelled with outer world solutions. Try creating a list of your "if only"s. Then literally and figuratively let go of the items on the list by tearing it up or burning it. This simple action can help set in motion the intention to set you free, enabling you to make a fresh and balanced start in the present, unencumbered by regrets and unfulfilled desires.
