Why I Got The Word "Open" Tattooed On My Back

It's been a whirlwind week between my tattoo, running all over heat-waved LA and taking a 9-hour redeye flight home (we had to stop in Salt Lake City to refuel). I'm writing again for Lemondrop, with two very exciting interviews lined up, but this latest piece is about why I got my new tattoo. It's by Joy Rumore at Twelve 28 Tattoo, recommended to me by Audacia Ray, which, needless to say, I recommend.

I'd always thought that I wasn't a tattoo person. There wasn't a single image I felt I had to have on my body. But when my friend Sheela and a bunch of other cool ladies I know made plans to get tattoos while we were all in Chicago, I decided I wanted in on the action.

I still couldn't come up with an image that worked for me, until I realized that I'm not a visual person so much as a word person. As a writer, words are what matter most to me; I stay up late at night reading, not watching TV. I remember quotes and song lyrics more than I remember movie scenes.

Once I decided I wanted a word, the one that came to mind was "open." I tend to be extremely pessimistic, and when something goes wrong in my life, instead of trying to fix it or make it better, I assume there's something wrong with me and that's why the problem is occurring.

Read the full essay here. And if you like it, please repost, comment and/or Digg it (on my tech to do list is figuring out how to get an exact Digg link - working on it!).

Grilled cheese food porn from LA's Grilled Cheese Truck

I fell for The Grilled Cheese Truck this weekend, conveniently parked at the West Hollywood Book Fair yesterday. Below are the cheesy mac melt (mac & cheese on whole wheat!) and a custom-made brie with red onion on whole wheat. Delicious!

I heart Coco de Mer

Yesterday I walked over to Coco de Mer in West Hollywood and was wowed by the gorgeous, gorgeous outside and inside. It is truly "erotic luxury" (its tagline). I signed copies of Yes, Sir and She's on Top, so you can get those there, and am looking into doing a reading in their beautiful garden. I snapped these photos:

I bought a greeting card and was given this giant purple penis shopping bag, a perfect gift for me!

Dirty Sexy Books loves Orgasmic, calls it "a glorious experience"

Check out this amazing review of Orgasmic: Erotic Stories for Women from Dirty Sexy Books (do check them out for lots of other excellent reviews). Also remember that you can hear Velvet Moore read from the excellent chemistry sex story "Chemistry" on October 21st, live and free with free cupcakes, at In The Flesh Reading Series. From the review:

It’s Orgasmic indeed. Some of these stories sent me straight to the moon, and then I drifted back down to earth only to take off again on the next page. After I finished this book it occurred to me that I’ve never read anything that focuses so wholly on female satisfaction. I think men tend to steal the limelight since they express arousal and orgasm in such a visual fashion. Women know how to hide it and fake it like pros, and sometimes that works against us, because our bodies are not simple to decipher, and oh! the frustration when we desperately want someone to break our code and read us like a book. That happens in Orgasmic, and it’s a glorious experience.

“Chemistry” by Velvet Moore starts with the line, “The smell of science makes me horny.” After reading about what happens to a hospital administrator in a laboratory, I can certainly understand why. The heroine in “Seeing Stars” by Louisa Harte suffers on a camping trip until she learns that exposing herself in nature can draw forth her primitive side, and every soft breeze or cool drop of rain is a sensory explosion while making love under the stars. Another couple has stealth sex in a public place while watching a lunar eclipse in “Moon Tantra” by Teresa Noelle Roberts.

As hot as I found the outdoor action, I was just as tantalized when things moved inside. ”Making Shapes” by Lily Harlem portrayed a woman who is my kind of artisan, and she makes functional art based on molds of her client’s most intimate parts. Who ever heard of falling in love with a penis at first sight? Well, it happens here. ”Animal Inside” by Neve Black is a voyeur’s dream, with a hole in the wall and two strangers enjoying their separate, yet shared, experiences. In “The London O” by Justine Elyot, a woman teases her lover with tales of past escapades, only to have him top them all with the help of a special pair of knickers.

These were just some of my favorites from this Orgasmic collection. Ladies, enjoy yourselves.

Signed copies of my books at Skylight Books plus Grilled Cheese Truck food porn

I walked (!!!!) to Skylight Books today and got a little tour and signed some of my books, so check out their erotica section. I also bought the memoir Cheesemonger: A Life on the Wedge by Gordon Edgar (Chelsea Green), which I'd never heard of but found in their food section. Just before I hit up the Grilled Cheese Truck for the first time. Looking forward to reading about punk rock cheesemaking. I did link to Amazon, because I get a little kickback, but I also love indie bookstores, hence this post. Click here to find Cheesemonger at your local indie bookstore via IndieBound.

In Los Angeles, live on the radio tonight, BDSM Night at Dr. Suzy

I'm going to be on the Dr. Susan Block show again tonight, this time live, 10:30-midnight Los Angles time! Click here to listen. Tomorrow I'll be at the West Hollywood Book Fair 1:15-2:15 on a sex writing panel. I will also be chasing down the Grilled Cheese Truck, and stopping by Skylight Books in Los Feliz and also high-end, beautiful sex toy store Coco de Mer to sign books! I used lots of stuff from Coco de Mer in my about-to-debut Orgasmic book trailer, and think I can safely say my books have never looked so gorgeous as they do in the display case at the one in New York.

I also have to adjust some of my clothing so my bra strap doesn't rub against my new tattoo on my back (I'm writing about it so will talk about it more next week.)

Sacramento Book Review says Fast Girls "not just stories of slut after slut"

Alex Barclay reviewed my anthology Fast Girls: Erotica for Women for Sacramento Book Review:

From the strictly sexual to the deeper, and sometimes darker, emotions that accompany sex, Fast Girls mines the range of human emotions. Blatant and unapologetically sexy, Fast Girls features some of the best voices in new erotica. From a communal shower to a kinky sex club, from myriad toys to strictly skin, these girls don’t say no or take it for an answer.

Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel defines fast as both wild and promiscuous, as according to Webster, but her selection of stories seeks something else, something deeper, not just stories of slut after slut, but stories of women who defy social norms, are bold and dynamic, with something to realize about sex and about themselves. The stories reflect what it is to be fast, being promiscuous and defying, both in states of mind as well as in states of motion. All of them speak to the reader on a deeper level as the women defy social conventions, raise eyebrows, and embrace what it is to be “fast.” Read it fast or slow, this anthology delivers.

Naked News video clip and sexy naked lady stories in Smooth

Last fall I was on Naked News and finally figured out how to get the clip online (thanks, Vimeo!). Obviously it's not safe for work, because my interviewer was completely naked. I can't quite describe what that was like but I was so impressed by the whole operation and she was incredibly nice and I certainly hope to go back on someday.

Speaking of having no clothes on, check out my brand-new anthology Smooth: Erotic Stories for Women. I'll be posting excerpts and more about it, but I can tell you there there's a sushi girl (read an excerpt from that story here), tattoos, sex workers, models and so much more.

Sex column: "Like a (Very Experienced) Virgin"

My latest sex column, "Like a (Very Experienced) Virgin," is up now at SexIs Magazine, talking about losing my virginity at age 17, Easy A, and The Virginity Hit.

It’s hard to believe that 17 years—half my life—ago, I lost my virginity, by which I mean, had sex with a man for the first time. I remember it very clearly: He was 31, which now sounds scandalous, but back then made me feel totally cool. An older man was interested in me! I didn’t know anything about condoms or birth control or sex. I didn’t know about orgasms or BDSM or even masturbation (I was a nerdy late bloomer), but I remember I totally wanted to do it. I probably thought I was in love, though I don’t even remember his last name.

I liked the way he’d lift my wrist to smell my Body Shop vanilla perfume (a scent I still wear). I liked the way he’d lean over me while I placed address labels on envelopes (we worked together). I liked the way he looked at me and made me feel wanted. I liked that he made me feel, much more than my diploma did, like I was an adult.

Introduction: Fast Is a (Sexy) State of Mind

I like the fast girls best/they do whatever they wanna do. —Sarge, “Fast Girls”

I named this book after a song called “Fast Girls” by an indie pop/rock band called Sarge*. That song is a feisty, punk-rock ode to a hot girl who is captivating in all kinds of ways.

I’m sure you know a girl like that. Or a woman. Or a lady. Or a butch. Or a femme. Or…you get the idea. She’s the kind of babe who takes no prisoners, who owns her life and her sexuality and not only doesn’t apologize for them, makes sure you notice her and what she’s all about.

Two definitions of “fast,” according to Merriam-Webster are “wild” or “sexually promiscuous,” and while that is the seed of what I was angling for here, I didn’t just want to read about slut after slut after slut. I wanted to read about women who in some way defy the conventional norms-whatever those are in this day and age. That doesn’t mean being shocking for shock’s sake, but following their passion, seeking out what it is that they need to be truly pleasured.

What I love about these fast girls is that even as they are bold, daring and dynamic, they have a thing or two to learn about sex and themselves.

Consider Susie Hara’s fifty-one-year-old protagonist in “Waiting for Beethoven” as she gets it on with a younger man. In current pop culture terms, she’s the cougar, the aggressive older woman seeking her sexy prey. But she is actually nervous and uncertain, as well as aroused. “And now there was no point in telling him she wasn’t going to come when she could already feel a wave of pleasure rolling inside her, kind of a pre-coming feeling, but different than usual; she couldn’t really tell what was her clit and what were the walls inside her and what was contracting and what was releasing and then she realized she must be coming because her body had taken over and been taken over in this luscious finger symphony so she just gave in,” writes Hara, in a description of female orgasm that I think will be familiar to many.

In this book, fast is as much a state of mind as a state of motion. It’s not about trying to slut it up to impress anyone, but about finding what works for you. I was intrigued to find that playing with prostitution, or whoring, came up as a theme in many submissions, as did threesomes with one woman and two men. It makes sense that fast would be associated with women who mix cash and sex, as happens in Angela Caperton’s “Playing the Market,” where the new economy mixes with the world’s oldest profession. In my “Whore Complex,” whoredom is more a state of mind, a go-to fantasy that leaps from the bounds of dirty talk to real life with some unusual consequences. There’s also exhibitionism, such as in Jacqueline Applebee’s “Five-Minute Porn Star,” and submission–there’s a lot of very hot female submission and BDSM play in this book.

These girls are fast when they want to be…and slow at other times. They want to crack their lovers’ secret codes, find out what makes them tick, as happens in Charlotte Stein’s “Married Life.” I like this story because the wife is not just passively accepting her humdrum sex life, but she doesn’t want to have an affair or get a divorce. She wants her husband, the man she loves, but she wants him openly, honestly, freely and when they both give a little of themselves and bravely bare their souls, they find true happiness.

These girls don’t give it up for just anyone. Even the ones who get around have a reason for choosing their lovers, and it’s those reasons, those images, that resonate with me. Here’s Tristan Taormino in “Winter, Summer,” rhapsodizing about the woman she’s about to seduce (or perhaps, who’s about to seduce her is more accurate):

She’s the boy I have dreamed about and jerked off to too many times to count. The one who won’t leave my fantasies, who cruises me in my bedroom, who seduced me months ago in another lifetime with her voice, who plays pool and drinks beer, who grabs my ass in crowded bars just to fuck with my boundaries and catch me off guard, who makes my brain get wet and my pussy explode.

Exactly. Though there are women on the prowl here, women who go after younger men, women who pounce, women who pursue, there are others who are excited about being the object of another’s affection, lust and desire. For them, being fast means courting the man or woman (or more than one person) they are searching for.

These fast girls speak to me on many levels. I admire them, respect them, marvel at them, raise my eyebrows at them, want them. But most of all, I’m excited that they’ve broken free of whatever messages we all receive about how a woman is “supposed” to act and instead they are bent on acting however they damn well please. And that’s my personal definition of a fast, not to mention foxy, girl.

Sex column: Internet dating pros and cons

My latest sex column is up and it's about online dating:

When I first signed up for FetLife, I was shocked at the seemingly countless kinky choices I could list on my profile: wrestling, pin-ups, play rape, face sitting/smothering, distress. While technically it’s a social networking site, I’m including it here because lots of people use it for finding dates and hookups. Plus, those choices exemplify my problem with online dating in general: How do I sum up what I’m about, sexually or otherwise, in a few words?

I did mark off my favorites, such as bondage, breast/nipple torture, pain, pinching, spanking, talking dirty and vibrators—but really, how much does that tell you about me? I’d imagine not that much because even though I was given choices like being into or curious about these fetishes, or giving, receiving or watching, to me, that is just more than a stranger needs to know about my sexuality.

It’s certainly not something I’d discuss on a first date, and that’s why I only use FetLife for professional purposes. I’d be extremely dismayed if I did decide to sleep with a date and they just assumed they knew what made me tick because they’d read about me in such a limited form. I’m much more about the excitement of the slow reveal, à la a burlesque act.

Introduction: Naked Girls in All Their Glory

Smooth. Sleek. Naked. Bare. All of these words describe the women you’ll find in this book, women who let you peek beneath their skirt hems, unbutton their blouses, reach inside their panties and in so doing, reveal something essential about themselves. They aren’t content to simply let sex happen, but are compelled to explore the ways their bodies react to every tactile moment.

These are not stories about body image or learning to love your curves. These are sensual tales in which women and men celebrate the joy of being carnal, lusty, hungry and animalistic; stories in which the urge to get naked, in the literal and figurative senses, drives women to boldly go where they haven’t before.

In the opening story, the stunning sauna romp “Löyly,” by Angela Caperton, Sorrow Cove becomes a very happy place when our heroine, Andie, submits to a sensual beating in the intense heat. Caperton writes, “Blood pounded in my veins and pooled suspiciously in my belly. Anticipation added an edge of tension and vulnerability before the bright shock of the strike. It wasn’t hard, but the leaves laced my skin with firm control, a lush wetness and a shimmer of sting that slashed my back with an awakening charge of delight. I closed my eyes, savoring the moment, the fresh scent of the birch binding me in a cloud of awareness and newfound sensation.”

Food and sex are clearly twin appetites waiting to be released, and in “The Sushi Girl,” by Anika Gupta, they converge in a work setting for the narrator as she balances raw fish on her body. She doesn’t just lie there, though; she engages with her customers, lets them look and taste even as she makes sure her naked body, while still, speaks loudly.

Each of these women are stripped, whether literally, as in Clancy Nacht’s story of the same name, or in some other way that leaves them vulnerable, exposed, open to whoever they’ve let enter their most personal space. Even when they are acting as voyeurs, watching others strip down, as in “Live Action,” by Susan St. Aubin, they are being changed by what they see, by the skin that speaks to them and their fantasies.

For other characters, adorning their bodies—with tattoos in “Ink,” by Jennifer Peters, or the sensual strokes of a paintbrush in “True Colors,” by Louisa Harte—is a way to live a more vibrant, outspoken life, and their reward is a richer sex life than they’d had before. That makes sense, because when we bare all, we invite others to touch, to feel every curve, every bend, every inch of skin.

Ultimately, this is a book about getting to know your body from the outside in, about showing yourself off for a lover and knowing the power the naked body holds. At the gym, in the shower, on the subway, at a tea party, the women in Smooth leave behind their inhibitions and go where many women have only dreamed about. Sexy, playful, sensual and celebratory, these nineteen stories will be sure to entice you as they reveal so much skin.

Reminder: September 15 is Obsessed anthology deadline

The hard deadline for Obsessed: Erotic Romance for Women is September 15th. I'm honored to have some wonderful romance authors included in my (in progress) manuscript and am very excited to see what else authors have cooked up. And the Women in Lust deadline, for the wilder and crazier type erotica, is November 1st. After that I'll have another call or two to post. I'm excited because this month will bring my anthology Smooth and then very soon Passion: Erotic Romance for Women, for which I'm doing a reading/35th birthday celebration November 11 at Word. I love getting to read alongside the authors in my books, and that I've gotten to do so in Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle, Eugene, and right here. Dusty Horn will be in from San Francisco to read October 21st at Orgasm Night at In The Flesh Reading Series, along with fellow Orgasmic contributors Heidi Champa, Lana Fox and Velvet Moore. I met Dusty through Violet Blue while in San Francisco last year, and she also has a story in Best Bondage Erotica 2011 and hopefully more on the way. So stay tuned for event details. I promise fun and hotness! And with In The Flesh ending, I may do selective and special events going forward in new venues, hopefully combining multimedia elements with traditional reading. And, of course, cupcakes.

Obsessed: Erotic Romance for Women
To be published by Cleis Press in Spring 2011

Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel is looking for romantic, primarily heterosexual erotic stories for women's erotica anthology Obsessed: Erotic Romance for Women. Final book will include couples having passionate adventures as well as new relationships. Stories can feature couples exploring new erotic territory, strangers who share a spark, exes ruining, etc. Creativity and diversity of story lines are key. You may include the hero’s point of view alongside the heroine’s but please keep in mind this book is geared toward a female audience. Kink, sex toys, exotic locations/scenarios welcome as long as there is an element of erotic romance as opposed to strictly erotica. Stories should be strongly plotted, have engaging, unique characters and be hot and original. I highly prefer contemporary settings but will consider a limited amount of historical and paranormal fiction. All characters must be over 18; no nonconsensual scenes, incest or bestiality. No poetry. For an example of the kinds of stories I’m looking for, see my anthologies Bedding Down: A Collection of Winter Erotica and Dirty Girls: Erotica for Women or the work of Megan Hart, Lauren Dane, Kayla Perrin, Marilyn Jaye Lewis, etc.
