I hope you are feeling thankful this year, even if it's in small doses. I have strived hard to make gratitude a daily, deliberate part of my life this year, and along with that, I've tried to figure out ways to change the parts of my life that I don't like. It's not always easy, and sometimes there are curveballs thrown at me. For instance, in January, I'll be moving for the fourth time in four years. Do I want to? No. Will it require time and money that could have been invested back into my business? Yes. But is there anything I can do about it? No, and since I live by the Serenity Prayer, I am simply pulling out the packing tape today and getting a head start on packing up what will turn out to be mostly books, along with clothes and other important items. The upside of moving so often, especially after having lived in my convenient Williamsburg, Brooklyn apartment for 13 years, is that I care less about "stuff" in general and more about the specific things that matter. It gets easier to pare down each time. I've gifted hundreds of books to friends, and gotten to share in the delight of them reading one I liked (or, in some cases, never wound up reading). I got serious with myself about what items I wanted to keep and which I didn't.

Out of all the things I've read about gratitude, this post by the wonderful Latham Thomas of Mama Glow, "My Home Burned Down Before Thanksgiving & I Am Still Thankful" spoke to me the most. Read it and treasure people, health, love, humanity, not things. Yes, it's a paradox: this post is mainly about giving away a thing, and I make a living by crafting things (books) I care deeply about. But I care about them differently now after my moves. I know that they can be a burden as well as a blessing. Books have taught me almost everything I know about life, but they are not life itself. It's a good lesson to remember.

Surprise, your book's on sale (even though it can't be found by searching)

Sometimes, Amazon.com can feel like the Bermuda Triangle. I wish I understood how it worked, because online sales make up the bulk of my book sales. Generally, I like to check on my books and make sure they are in stock, see what people are saying about them, and get as good of a read on their status as I can. So it's frustrated me for a while that for some reason, Gotta Have It: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex is excluded from Amazon search until you tell them to include adult items.

Yes, it's an adult item, but as you can see below, from screenshots taken this morning, other titles of mine show up right away in search. This problem means that I am likely losing sales from people who might want to find the book, but can't. It also means that when I search my books by price to see if there are any sales (I'm usually notified, but I like to see what's happening because prices fluctuate), the fact that Gotta Have It Kindle is only $7.12 doesn't show up. It was even cheaper last week! That's a huge bargain for 69 stories. The paperback is currently only $7.50 on Amazon.

Simply put: I'd love to work with her on all my audiobooks. Since that's not possible, the ones she has worked on are the ones I continually encourage people to check out, and I would love to work with her again (hint, hint!). One of the main criticisms I've seen of my 3 69-story anthologies, all narrated by Rose, is that they are too short and there's not enough story. Orgasmic is one of my favorite anthologies I've worked on and has a story I highlight in my erotica writing workshops: "Chemistry" by Velvet Moore. When you have a world class, genius narrator and promoter like Rose Caraway, it's not that surprising that, if I'm reading my last royalty statement correctly, the Audible audiobook version of Gotta Have It: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex sold over 8 times the number of copies as the print and ebook versions in the first second quarter of 2013.



When I first saw this, I was actually kindof bummed: does that mean the print version sucked? Is it worth editing 69-story collections? What did I do wrong? It's depressing when a book you've devoted your time and attention and passion to bombs, even if it's a temporary nosedive. For me, and I'm sure I take it way too personally, but that's how I roll, when it happens repeatedly it makes me question whether I should find a new way to make a living, whether my books have simply run their course and readers are looking elsewhere for their smut. It was a shock to me since the sales dropped drastically from the first quarter of the year. But then I started looking at it a little differently, concluding instead that the audiobook kept the print book alive. That audiobook, which I believe has been my bestselling audiobook, has been in the Audible erotica and sexuality bestseller list for quite a while. It's garnered many reviews and I'm pretty sure has brought new listeners to my work, listeners who just might seek out my other stories and books. Those sales, in fact, made Gotta Have It my second bestselling book that quarter, after Suite Encounters: Hotel Sex Stories (click through to read the introduction and more about it).

That is amazing, and awe inspiring, and makes incredibly grateful to Rose Caraway for being so good at her job that she helped pave the way for my future books. I'm seeing as I browse my Audible listings as well as those of other authors that the narrator pretty much makes or breaks the audiobook. The reviewers there can be pretty scathing. What I love about it too is that there is no way on earth I could produce an audiobook myself, but thanks to Cleis Press and Audible and Rose, this book has been given a new life, one I'm incredibly proud of. So thank you for listening, and thank you Rose for working your magic on my big little book (which is what I'm calling these 69-story collections, since they look and feel differently in my hands that my usual proper paperback sized ones).
