Everything old is new again, or a deep dive into some of my earliest BDSM erotica anthologies

In my world, new is what's in. The next article or essay I'm writing, the new book to hit the shelves, the next call for submissions. Yesterday's news may as well be last century's, it often seems. The new whatever it is is the one warranting attention, both mine and my editor's or publisher's and, presumably, readers'. This plays out in how I earn a living, in that the books that sell the most are usually the newly released ones, although sometimes an older title will surprise me by taking on an extended life of its own. I certainly don't spend much time contemplating my older work, save for what's been my annual moves when I unpack all my books (I'm hoping this year broke the annual move cycle and we get to stay in our current place for a long long time).

It can be easy to forget about the work that came before when you are always focused, by necessity, on the now, on the present and future. I've had somewhat of a crisis of confidence in the last week and have been soul searching and trying to figure out my next professional steps, asking myself the hard questions about whether I'm the kind of person who makes bold moves like the people I most admire or whether it's time to retreat to something safer, more stable, less scary and risky. Yes, I get signs from the universe, but I often question them, and question myself. I've been at this crossroads lately trying to make sense of what to do next, and I don't have any major answers just yet, although I'm hatching new projects that I'm equally excited and nervous about and working to creatively visualize them and believe in them, and therefore, in myself.

I also think it's natural to hope/want your work to improve over time, which is why when I do move and pull out artifacts from long ago, things like my old zine I'm Not Waiting, begun almost half my lifetime ago and lasting three blessedly short issues, or that time I was flunking out of law school but decided to write for the NYU paper instead, or my writing for websites that are now defunct, I cringe and quickly move on. I know all those experiences are part of me, but perhaps as a mental self-preservation measure, I look toward what I can do with the knowledge I have now, at 40, how I can move forward toward my goals.

hesontopshesontop

So I admit it's equally flattering and unnerving that writer LN Bey did an incredibly deep dive review into six of my BDSM erotica anthologies: He's on Top; She's on Top; Yes, Sir; Yes, Ma'am; Please, Sir; Please, Ma'am. I think it's safe to say my work has never been analyzed this closely. I never in a million years would have imagined someone reading and rereading these books, analyzing them so precisely (if I had imagined that, most likely I never would have completed them, because hello, terrifying). I say that not because I'm not proud of them, just because they seemed like books I put out, and then moved on from. I know that book buyers are fickle and bookstore space is often ephemeral (though thankfully these are all available in ebook form). So to see them treated as worthy of study, to see favorites dissected and all that care taken with my little books is both a surprise and a new way of me thinking about my books. They are not dead, but very, very alive.

If you've enjoyed those books or even if you've never heard of them, it's worth checking out and warms my heart to see someone so passionate not about my books per se, although that is obviously an ego boost, but about the erotica genre. That reverence for erotica is something I see occasionally, but not all that often, and at a time when I'm, say, forbidden from buying ads or boosting posts on Facebook, and often sex is treated as utterly unwelcome in online and tech spaces, it's refreshing to see my chosen genre treated with such high regard.

For me personally, it's very easy to look at those older books simply as numbers on a royalty spreadsheet, as books I'm proud of but that are part of history, not the present. I'm grateful for the reminder that books are forever, and that even when I'm not always sure of it, my work matters to someone. It's a feeling I will take with me as I work on editing my next anthology, especially as I seek out women writers who might not come across an erotica call for submissions but just might have insights worth sharing with the world. That's my highly personal take, at a particularly charged time in my life. If you are interested in the dynamics of BDSM as they play out in these books and/or BDSM fiction, definitely check it out.

3 BDSM erotica anthologies for $1.99 each on Kindle in June

It's a new month, which means new Kindle ebook sales on 3 of my BDSM erotica books. For the female dominant/male submissive (femdom) fans, there's She's on Top: Erotic Stories of Female Dominance and Male Submission (which was one of my earliest books with Cleis Press, from 2007, and has one of my favorite covers) and Please, Ma'am: Erotic Stories of Male Submission and in the female sub/male dom category, with a hot cover by Barbara Nitke, Surrender: Erotic Tales of Female Pleasure and Submission, which has one of my favorite story titles ever ("Dear Professor Pervert"). More details on each below and they are available in print and from other stores too but the sale price is on the Kindle edition. Also if you like aural erotica as well, you can get the Audible audiobook versions for only $3.99 once you buy the Kindle edition. And I was in the middle of posting this when I remembered that the cover of Please, Ma'am was shot by the incredibly talented Christine Kessler, who recently passed away. Lots of people are posting photos she took and remembrances on Twitter.

She's on Top: Erotic Stories of Female Dominance and Male Submission

Turning the tables on rigid gender roles, the stories in She’s on Top honor the Amazon, the dominatrix, the handcuff-toting, whip-wielding she-devil of the male bottom’s deepest dreams. Employing every item in their bag of tricks, from strap-ons to metal cinches, these hot dommes like nothing better than teasing and tormenting their devoted subjects – often at the same time. With stories by some of the best writers in the field of BDSM erotica such as Stan Kent, Debra Hyde, and Saskia Walker, She’s on Top shows that pleasure’s best when dispensed by a firm female hand.

Please, Ma'am: Erotic Stories of Male Submission

Description:
Men are the ones gifted with all sorts of power in our society, but a dirty little secret is that so many of them long to strip themselves of this power, to be tied down, gagged, spanked, taken, and owned. They want to ease the burdens of manliness, if only for a little while, to be "ordered" to do all the naughty things of which they've dreamed. Please, Ma'am shows some of the tantalizing possibilities out there for sniveling men and the women who love them. Best-selling erotica editor Rachel Kramer Bussel has gathered together top voices in the genre, including Stephen Elliott, Alison Tyler, Dominic Santi, and many more. In Please, Ma'am, men willingly submit to the deliciously dominant women who entertain their deepest desires and give them the treatment they crave.

Surrender: Erotic Tales of Female Pleasure and Submission

Description:
Rachel Kramer Bussel's bestselling books of submissive women and dominant men showcase our fantasies, desires, and deepest wishes. For those (and there are MANY) who love to be tired up, spanked, blindfolded, bound, or "used," for another's pleasure, these are books of inspiration. And, of course, these smart subs are getting exactly what THEY really want in very many ways.

Good BDSM erotica makes us understand all the emotions that can come into play when, well, playing: there can be uncertainty, nervousness, fear, excitement. Each of the 22 stories in Surrender are blazingly hot and because they illuminate some aspect of submission. The authors of the stories understand the art of submission and the thrill of surrender, whether that’s personal space, sight (“Without Eyes” by Terri Pray) or culinary choices (“Lunch” by Elizabeth Coldwell). What the women here want is to give up part of themselves to gain something else. They may still be skittish, but overcoming their fears, surrendering to them, yields beauty, pleasure and, in its way, power.

Valentine's Day kink: BDSM erotica featuring female submission and femdom and kinky couples

I was inspired by this Valentine's Day gift guide from Toronto site She Does The City (with help from the wonderful sex toy store Come As You Are), which paired Best Bondage Erotica 2014 with bondage cuffs to round up my BDSM erotica books, which are by far the most popular of all my books, into one post, in case you're looking for a holiday (or anytime) kinky gift. Again, until I believe tomorrow, February 14th, you can get 3 books for the price of 1 from my publisher Cleis Press by using the code VAL14.

You can find more about my 3 spanking erotica anthologies and all 4 editions of the Best Bondage Erotica series by clicking on those links. This post is already long so I'm not including the full tables of contents but will tell you that Serving Him, Surrender, Please, Sir, Yes, Sir and He's on Top all feature female submissives and male dominants (there are occasionally more than two people in the stories but that is the theme) and Please, Ma'am, Yes, Ma'am and She's on Top have female dominant/male submissive (femdom) themes. Surrender features stories that have been in assorted other books of mine, so if you're a completist and have read all my anthologies, you have probably read these, but if you're new to BDSM erotica and want a taste of the kind of submission that happens in Fifty Shades of Grey and similar books, I recommend any of the submissive female books.

I'm also including Lust in Latex: Rubber Sex Stories here because while it isn't an exact match in terms of a BDSM book, it's very kinky and has a bit of variety in terms of sexualities and fetishes and I think BDSM inclined readers will enjoy it. Incidentally, She's on Top has one of my favorite covers ever. I just love the smile on his face! For you audiobook listeners, you can listen to free samples of all my books directly on Audible.com.

Please, Sir: Erotic Stories of Female Submission
The fortunate women of Please, Sir are not docile pushovers by any means. They make the rules and negotiate with their masters — though sometimes they also get off on being pushed just a little too far by men they know they can trust. It's as if the doms who enter their lives see the potential for submission in these women and want to arouse them more than ever before by providing an opportunity for them to let go. The editor of the bestsellers He's on Top and Yes, Sir, Rachel Kramer Bussel has chosen 22 stories that celebrate the thrill of submission by women who know exactly what they want. The characters in Please, Sir may be doing the bidding of their dominants, but the tops are just as much subject to the will of their subs, in their own way, by making them ache, moan, and quiver. With stories by Shanna Germain, Elizabeth Coldwell, Alison Tyler, and more.

Kinky World reviews Please, Ma'am: Erotic Stories of Male Submission

I'm so thrilled with the first review that's come in (save for Amazon reviews) of Please, Ma'am: Erotic Stories of Male Submission.

This one's from the blog Kinky World and says, in part:

Each story, from the 18 different authors, shares the same goal of all being female-Dominant centered. From what I remember, each story is only told from the view of a male submissive – none are told from the Dominant perspective. Each story varies in the length of the story. Some are five pages while some go up to fifteen pages. The stories vary in the action itself as well as what fetishes are included in each story. A couple stories include crossdressing, some include foot fetishes, some include just-budding male submissives who just broke it to their female Dominant while some of the other stories include stories from full-24/7 relationships.

The thing that they all have in common is that they all are pretty erotic and well written. Each one is arousing in its own way, and if you don’t enjoy one of the stories, there’s another story that will be completely different that will really provide something just as erotic as the first one. I honestly didn’t find a single story in this erotic book that I wasn’t interested in reading though. If you do, though, the stories are different enough that you’ll still be able to find other stories in the book that would interest you if male submission interests you. However, all of the stories in this erotic novel are all male/female stories. There wasn’t any male/male stories which I didn’t notice at the time, but now that I look back, I find it a little odd that there wasn’t.

One of the stories I enjoyed the most was the last story of the book by Graydancer, “I’ll Do It. For Her”. He’s known as a great educator and Dominant in the BDSM scene, and I’ve heard a ton about him, so to read a story about how he sometimes lets down his guard and his wife dominates – it was refreshing, and I knew it was a story he actually wrote from the heart. The story itself seemed a lot more loving and caring than just arousing – which was an amazing way to end the book.

Since the closing story "I'll Do It. For Her." by Graydancer has garnered so much praise, I will share a little of it here:

More often, though, that nail dragging down my flesh is answered by a hissing breath I draw in, and my body tenses, curls, but not away, no, I curl toward the pain she wields. My eyes shut, because I am, even now, a little embarrassed at how much I want this, but that’s all okay, because at that moment I will do it. For her.

A particularly low and evil chuckle of satisfaction comes from her throat, and she begins to make me dance for her with nothing but her fingernail. Run it along my inner thigh, and my legs part for her; draw it across my chest, my torso lifts, spine arching up, a small cry offered as she flicks my hard little pebble of a nipple. Down my stomach, I know where it’s going, and even as my breath hollows it out, trying to escape, I am also lifting up, questing. Sometimes she gives me what I want. She digs in right next to my balls, in that little hollow where my legs meet my groin, and gives me the pleasure of that hidden spot. Other times she stops just short, and if I peek, I see her smile at the expression of frustrated lust on my face.

She loves making me want her to hurt me more.

I crave this pain she gives me, but it’s more than that--I crave the person she becomes. As she lifts on her elbow, over me, her heavy breast pressing against my chest, she lets out the growling laugh I love, and it trails into a satisfied hum as she watches me drink in the pain.

Or maybe what I crave is the person I become. I don’t know; we never really talk about it, it just happens, there in the dark with my cock harder than it ever gets in other sex play. What I know is that when she pushes my hands over my head, there’s no rope necessary to hold them there. There are no leather straps holding back my muscles. There’s not even the need to whisper a command; I know what she wants, and it is her will that keeps my arms up there, her will that I struggle against, my biceps shaking with the effort of not drawing my arms down to protect my vulnerable body.

The body I spread for her.

I may be jaded but I never get tired of beautiful book covers

I have three books coming out in three months - April is Please, Sir, May is Please, Ma'am and June is Fast Girls. (There are a few other anthologies and then a non-fiction book for Cleis and my novel in 2010, but I only have these covers now.)

I've had to resign myself this year to the fact that erotica -- or rather, my erotica collections -- aren't ever really going to make me the money that I had originally envisioned. I think of it more as a hobby that maybe brings in some cash and gives me some "credibility." It goes to a question I was asked at the Come As You Are workshop in Toronto, which was, basically, "If all you'll make is $50 a story, why write erotica?" I said, essentially, for the self-expression. Because you want to. Because you have something to say. I still believe that, even if I'm not crying tears of joy in the Barnes & Noble in Chelsea (and not just because it no longer exists). I'm still honored with each story published, still get rejections, still learning. I'm trying my best to learn how to better market my books, how to makes ones that don't have negative sales (okay, that was just one, but still, a very sad royalty statement), how to improve both the quality of my writing, my editorial selections, and my sales.

I just saw these first two covers; the tables of contents are still being finalized, but I'm especially excited about Fast Girls, and you'll know why when I can share the lineup. I definitely want to shoot a book trailer for it, and again, for the sheer joy of expressing myself in a new medium. I will have to keep buying lotto tickets to try to get out of debt, and I'm okay with that. I still love editing books, no matter who's buying (or isn't).

Please, Ma'am: Erotic Stories of Male Submission, to be published May 2010 by Cleis Press

Fast Girls: Erotica for Women, to be published June 2010 by Cleis Press (and obviously, just as with Dirty Girls, which continues to sell well, it's not just for women!)

And because it's so beautiful and I do hold out hopes that this one will be a marketplace breakthrough...

Please, Sir and Please, Ma'am ponderings

I'm wrapping up my own stories for Please, Sir and Please, Ma'am and reading the last few stories, before I hopefully wrap them up next week. I'm eager to get these anthologies wrapped up fast so I can move on, and am trying to figure out what my next steps would be.

But I did want to again share some thoughts on the nature of BDSM erotic anthologies and anthologies in general. I think it's the nature of themed anthologies that there will be overlap, but what authors submitting to my books need to understand (I obviously can't speak for anyone else) is that it's not just about picking the 20 best stories, but the 20 best stories that fit well together. This means that I'm going to have to reject some excellent stories, because they read pretty much like the next excellent story. Again, this is not about any specific story, but about what I've read so far as a whole.

Please, Sir and Please, Ma'am were always working, tentative titles for me, which I realize in retrospect I should've made clearer in the call, or even just said "Untitled BDSM anthology from sub's POV." Because that is what I was looking for, not the honorifics "Sir" and "Ma'am" plastered all over my books, as if there to satisfy some quota. That gets old very, very fast. Because the fact is, not all tops or masters or dommes or whatever you want to call it are going to be "sir" or "ma'am." That terminology isn't always right. Sometimes it's not so formalized, or there are other words, or actions, or ways of showing the submission/dominance.

I was looking for those other ways, for the feelings, the sensation of submission to the be the through line in these books, not the language. In some cases, it's there and it works. Some have perfected it, and the Sirs and Ma'ams come alive. I can envision them as people, individuals. But in many, it detracts, it makes them seem just like all the others, especially when I'm facing a giant pile of stories to read, and especially won't make sense with a different title. I'm thrilled with some of the stories, especially a few new-to-me authors, who gave me wholly original pieces that took me somewhere I never would've expected to go with this type of book, who took the theme and ran with it. As soon as I can, I'll share my introductions with you (probably by October).

I found this interview with a domme at the blog Yes, I'm a submissive man! that I liked a lot because it gets the point across that it's not a one size fits all fetish.

What's the greatest attribute a submissive man can offer?
The ability to communicate clearly and the willingness to learn. Ok, that's two, but they are equally important. I need to know what you are getting out of this experience and what is and is not working so that I can guide it accordingly. If you're allergic to dish soap I need to know that, if you love everything about service but can't get into that head space if I use your name instead of calling you "slave" I need to know that. Likewise I need you to remember the instructions I give and get a sense for how I like things done and then do them....

What turns you off about submissive men?
I like submissive men. They are the complement to my own sexuality after all. However, I am not a robot, nor was I sent down by central casting. There are many different parts to my life and being dominant or even just kinky is only one of them. I get turned off by submissive men who only see me as a step towards their sexual gratification. I'm a human being after all; don't start conversations with "may I kiss your feet mistress" until you know my name.

It's not about some stereotypical idea of what a Master or Domme is, but about individuals. Especially for the type of anthologies I'm editing, I need stories that will be varied and complex, and for me personally, as a reader and editor, I was longing for stories that got into the psychology as much as, if not more than, the kinky acts. I think/hope I have done what I set out to do, but we shall see once I hear back from my publisher in the fall. In the meantime, I have some hints about how to go about asking for what I want in my future calls for submission (I hope to do more kink-themed books in the future).

And I hope it's clear that I realize this is all easier said than done, which is why I'm scrambling to finish my stories for these books!

Writing guidelines: there for a reason

I'm going through submissions for Please, Sir, and have been pretty disappointed that about half the submissions I received were incorrectly formatted. (I say that to emphasize it's not just one or two, that wouldn't be the end of the world, but about half, and this is an ongoing problem - my guidelines are so long because every time I put out a call I see the same errors over and over, and it's, frankly, annoying.) I give people a pass if it's the first time submitting to me, but I wanted to share why this is so frustrating and time-consuming for me.

You might think, so what? The writing is what matters. But actually, the formatting is what first grabs my eye and when I have to manually indent paragraphs and reformat spacing and all those things that are clearly stated in my guidelines, it's a giant waste of time.

Then I'm in the bind of asking someone to reformat when I may not even want their story, or doing it myself, or just reading it with the incorrect formatting and deciding then.

It's not that it's necessarily a dealbreaker, it's more than cumulatively, when half of submissions have not followed the guidelines, it makes it much easier for me as a busy person to look at the ones that are formatted correctly. I would never sacrifice quality over formatting, but at the same time, I do a silent, non-moving jump for joy when I see a writer whose work I like and have published before...and know they have formatted it correctly before I even open it.

I in no way want to discourage people from submitting to my books. With the next few I'm editing for Cleis Press, I hope that, like with Peep Show, I can include writers I've never published before. I would love to read more stories like Elizabeth Coldwell's - she's someone whose work is relatively new to me but each time is just perfect. See "Lunch" in Yes, Sir for an example. That's what I'm looking for with Please, Sir (not literally that concept again, just writing as fine as that).

Anyway, I'm excited about the Please, Sir and Please, Ma'am books and a few others I'm working on, but just wanted to emphasize that guidelines, mine, anyway, really are there for a reason. I'd soooooo much rather someone ask a question if they don't understand something in them than send me something that will take me time to reconfigure before I even get a chance to read the story!

I'll end on a happy note: The deadline for these books is July 1st and both are wide open. I'm reading stories early and definitely need more.

Erotica calls for submission deadline July 1st: Please, Sir and Please, Ma'am

I'm racing to put the finishing touches on Best Sex Writing 2010 and then I'll be waiting for the guest judge and my publisher to approve it. Fingers crossed I can get it all sorted out next week. I'm reading Lisa M. Diamond's excellent though very scientific/academic Sexual Fluidity: Understanding Women's Love and Desire, which I am hoping to excerpt from. Anyway, I have these two calls out and would love to see your stories. Please make sure to read and follow all directions if you submit!

I got an email from a man who told me he and his wife took Spanked and Do Not Disturb away with them and read erotica to each other while getting it on in a hotel room. HOT!

I also got the latest catalog from my publisher, Cleis Press, and omg have they pulled out all the stops with the gorgeous covers, especially Best Lesbian Erotica 2010, which has a stunning black and white cover and will have the band BETTY as guest judge. It's the first edition edited by Kathleen Warnock (my lesbian pregnancy/travel erotica story "Swollen" is a finalist - fingers crossed).

So please submit stories, pass this on, etc. Stories should be from the point of view of the submissive, but beyond that, and the usual no underage/bestiality/nonconsent, anything goes. I don't like to be too too specific about "what I want" in my erotica calls in terms of topics because then I get inundated with stories about those things, and I can't use them all, so all I can really say (well, beyond what's below) is be creative! I'll also say that I used a lot of new (to me) authors in Peep Show (click for Table of Contents) and hope to keep doing so in my upcoming anthologies.

Please, Sir: Erotic Stories of Female Submission and Male Dominance
Please, Ma’am: Erotic Stories of Male Submission and Female Dominance

Edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel
To be published by Cleis Press in Spring 2010

These two companion anthologies will explore the power dynamics of BDSM from the sub's/bottom's point of view. For an idea of the kinds of stories I like, please read my recent anthologies Yes, Sir: Erotic Stories of Female Submission and Yes, Ma’am: Erotic Stories of Male Submission. I strongly prefer modern settings, though have included the occasional historical piece. Futuristic/science fiction settings are almost never my cup of tea.

Please, Sir: What's it like to be a female submissive, whether a full-time slave to a powerful master, or a kinky woman involved in an intense scene? These stories should explore the range of ways women submit to men, whether masters, husbands, boyfriends, play dates, strangers, internet chatters, etc. Is the storyteller a lifelong bottom, or a new convert to kink? Does merely offering herself up to any guy get her off, or does something about this particular top excite her? Can be long- or short-term relationships, single encounters, or anything in between, as long as the characters and plot are believable and the story is hot. (I don't want simple snapshots of scenes that don't tell us anything about the characters' motivation.) Story should be from the point of view of a female masochist and or submissive/bottom, though it can be told from a first, second or third person POV (first is preferred).

Please, Ma’am: What makes a man cower before a powerful woman? Is he living out a lifelong fantasy, or has he always taken the submissive role with women? I want stories of sissy maids, hardcore masochists, visits with dommes, husbands completely devoted to their wives, full-time slaves, play partners, and much more. These can be long- or short-term relationships, single encounters, professionals, etc., as long as the characters and plot are believable and the story is hot. (I don't want simple snapshots of scenes that don't tell us anything about the characters' motivation.) Story should be from the point of view of a male masochist or submissive/bottom, though it can be told from a first, second or third person POV (first is preferred).

Both anthologies will feature stories from a wide spectrum of the BDSM world. The more creative your storytelling, the better. The examples listed above are just that, examples; feel free to let your imaginations run wild! I encourage you to think beyond clichéd scenarios and set your stories outside of the traditional play parties/dungeons, as well as thinking outside the box when it comes to "power play" and am especially looking for stories where not all of the erotic action is centered around physical sensation. There can also be more than two people in a given story or scene (or even just one if they are following someone's orders), and bisexual scenarios are welcome as long as the bottom/top relationship is a heterosexual one, as fitting the title. My biggest pet peeve with the submissions I’ve rejected in the past is lack of characterization/jumping into the BDSM scene too quickly.

Guidelines: Stories should be unpublished and not submitted elsewhere for publication. Stories should be 1,500 – 4,000 words, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, in a Word document only. If it is truly impossible to send a Word document, please send as both a RTF AND in the body of the email. You MUST include your bio (50 words MAX) and full contact info (mailing address, phone number, real name/pseudonym) when you submit.

Payment will be $50/story and 1 copy of the book upon publication in Spring 2010. Contributors will retain the rights to their stories. You may submit up to two stories per book. Please note that the publisher has final approval over the manuscript.

Send your submission as a Word document to pleaseantho@gmail.com ONLY with either"Please, Sir Submission" or "Please, Ma’am Submission" in the subject line—if you are submitting to both anthologies, please send separate submissions for each (though you can attach 2 stories for one book in the same email).

Please make sure to follow ALL directions. I'm getting a lot of single-spaced, non-Word document submissions without bios or mailing addresses. Please also make sure you send your FINAL version of your story, not a first (and then second or third) draft. All of the pertinent information, including a polished version of the story and your bio/contact info should be included in a single email, not multiple ones. Thank you.
