Breaking: Katie Spades is probably aka Kara Rogers, aka "Mistress Gorgeous," arrested

On a tip from Mitch at All Things Spanking, I've found out that the woman going by Kara Rogers, aka "Mistress Gorgeous," who was charged with "sexual conduct for a fee and allowing a premise to be used for immoral purposes" is in all likelihood also known as Katie Spades (who formerly crowned herself "Princess of Spanking"). Mitch emailed me that someone had emailed him the tip that they are one and the same, and aside from the photo likeness, details in the article match information I was emailed by Katie Spades while doing research for my 2006 Village Voice column "Spanker's Delight." Spades parlayed her fame as a spanking model into an appearance on the Howard Stern show, but later took down her spanking-themed blog and all videos/photos related to it.

As you may recall, the current incarnation of Katie Spades claims she "is very ill both physically and mentally," and has also since disavowed herself of spanking. Except, apparently, when it comes to getting paid to do it to other people and if this is indeed her (which I am 99.9% sure about), clearly, she has recovered quite well.

However, more troubling than whatever happens to Rogers/probablySpades herself is this bit from the Boston Herald:

The online prostitution postings have become an urgent quality of life issue in the city, especially in the Allston-Brighton area.

“We had more and more people complaining in community meetings that strange men were lurking in their neighborhoods,” BPD undercover detective Jimmy Fong told the Herald. “These guys were hanging around waiting for their appointments now that the Internet has brought prostitution inside.”

Since the crackdown began, 40 illegal “massage parlors” and S&M dungeons in the area have been shut down, and at least 100 suspected prostitutes and johns have been arrested, Fong said.

“We use the Internet to try to get a handle on the prostitution problem. Many of the street workers have been pushed out,” Fong said. “They are moving outside of the city.”

For the record, I am in favor of legalizing prostitution and am not quite sure what constitutes "allowing a premise to be used for immoral purposes." I didn't graduate from law school but I simply don't see how that kind of language can be anything but utterly subjective. "Immoral purposes?" I'm sure there are plenty of Massachusetts residences being used for "immoral purposes" depending on whose morals we're judging by.

Nonetheless, I can't muster up much sympathy for Kara/probablyKatie based on Katie's crash and burn history with the spanking/BDSM community, but am curious to see how this crackdown, which apparently has been going on since April 2005, will affect the sex industry in Boston. The article also switches back and forth claiming that she was arrested for "soliciting sex for pay" at the start, and then at the end says Rogers and her husband "were charged with sexual conduct for a fee" (I'm not the only one confused by this wording). From the way I've always understood it, domination is not illegal per se but prostutition is. Perhaps this crackdown is their way of saying that that's not the case, at least in Boston.

Furthermore, the entire tone of the Herald piece practically implies that owning lots of paddles and sex toys is a crime in and of itself and fails to give even a cursory delineation between prostitution and domination, and seemingly mixes up the two. I also think the fact that she was calling herself "Mistress Gorgeous" makes this one of those media-ready stories, even if said media can't seem to distingush between "selling sex" and "selling domination." The ad in question read "Gorgeous Mistress available to meet submissive men."

Certainly an interesting story. Would be pretty wild if it really were Katie Spades. Sure looks like her. Seems to be some confusion about what kind of role sex for money played in this.

We're with you totally... prostitution should be legalized (like it is in parts of Nevada). That said, it would be hard to feel sorry for Katie if this is indeed her. Also would be SCARY if this arrest really isn't about sex.
