"Let's Blog About Sex"
"Let's Blog About Sex" - Koream Journal interview with Jessica Cutler:
It’s more a self-defense mechanism, she says. “You learn from experience; no one teaches you to be like this. I’ve been disappointed so many times that if I like someone, it’s like, oh, I better not like him too much because he’ll only end up disappointing me.”
Cutler is not the first woman to make such an argument: that her promiscuity serves as a protective moat around an otherwise fragile heart. Others would say it’s about time and that Cutler need not justify her behavior. She’s only doing what men have been doing so cavalierly for so long. The sexual playing field is finally being leveled.
But most days, for Cutler, it’s not as ideological as all that. At the end of the day, it comes down to this: “I have to take the role of boyfriend and divide it up among several guys because I can’t find one person who can take care of me the way I want.”
Cutler does believe in monogamy, she says, but the cultural climate is such that it is assumed that any reasonably attractive 20- and 30-something urbanite will be juggling at least two dates on any given weekend. With this hedge-your-bets style of dating, “You never do end up working hard on any relationship,” Cutler concedes. Monogamy, therefore, is a quixotic and, daresay, quaint concept.
